F-86D W.I.P. pics.

Well this is the newest build, the F-86D from Revell 1/48. This will be my test bed for something I’ve never done…An Alclad Metal finish. Yaaaaaayyyyyy.
O’well I hope y’all like…
BTW—you might notice the seat and head-rest look full-bodied, I added rolled aluminum foil to give it some more fill since I was not adding the pilot.

Nice work on the pit. Good luck on the Alclad2 NMF.

Regards, Rick

Great work! Can’t wait to see how the finish comes out. I have an F-86F in the pipeline which will be my first excursion into Alclad, and I’m watching everyone else’s build’s closely to learn from their experiences. In fact, it was a lousy NMF that caused me to chuck my Sabre Dog before it was finished. Now, seeing yours, I want to get another and try again. Until I saw yours, I didn’t know so much could be got from that, admittedly, nicely molded cockpit. Of course, it takes a good modeler to make it come to life, and you certainly have achieved that.

Thanks guys, sure are laying it on thick[;)]. The pits are the parts I love to do. It’s the frame that worries me…[%-)].

looks like a great start to me.

Looking great man. I like that… no worries nothing caught my eye [;)], other then a good job.
Just remember your finishing skills are what will make a NMF. So any seams, anything where you have to work it to close it all up will have to have a prestine finish to it. When you spray the gloss black (if thats the base coat youll use) look closely at anyplace you worked to make sure the finish is tops. Use the gloss black like a primer coat to find all the stuff you missed. Take your time and youll have a real winner.

Thanks fightnjoe and woodbeck3. Hey Woodbeck3 I should use an Acrylic base coat right? Well thats what I have heard anyway. Again thanks for the replys.

Looks good so far -
Make sure you post a pic of the airframe when you spray the Alclad.

Looks great so far, Better research your subject aircraft for, Not too many Saber Dogs were in Bare metal… Most were painted alumin/anti corrosive… Same is true for many
RF-84s, F-100s and 101s of that time period.

Thanks guys for the replys, and thanks butchy for the tip. My dad worked on these birds for about a month before they were givin the shiney new F-101. I will double check but he told me they were metal color. How close are the two colors, could the anti-corr. be easily confussed for the bare metal?

BTW–I will be making the decals with the squadron 333rd FIS stationed @ Charleston,SC. This should be fun.

Excellent job on the cockpit , looks great so far , hope it all turns out well for you , can’t
wait to see the pics when its completed .

Easiest way to compare is the lack of different sheen in panels… In the old color and even B&W photos if bare metal you can almost always see the difference in sheen on panels and wings etc. I did a nice job on a 1/72 F-100 a few years back. Spent 40 or 50 hours on it and painted it in SNJ silvers etc. At the show I did not place even though I thought it was a strong entry… The judges approached me later on and said my kit was beautiful but the bird I did was not a bare metal A/C… Come to find out one of the judges was a ordinance man for that Airgroup in the late 50s when their F-100s were wearing those markings. The kit and aftermarket decal instructions said Bare metal.
Oh well…
An old airforce vet and fellow hobby club member told us most all USAF A/C stationed overseas were painted the Alum Finish or ADC grey by the late 50s…

Butchy,
Okay, this is some good stuff!!! So if it turns out it was a anti-corr. coating should it be an aluminum color. To tell you the truth, I bought one bottle of the Alclad 2 in the Aluminum color. I was going to buy a second color maybe a darker aluminum because the pix show different color panels here and there. BUT the pix I have are B/W. When I ask my dad he said they were metal color, but he did not say bare metal, I think the bare metal maybe a mistake on my part.

Thanks for the info.

I,ve had great luck with the new Tamiya Spray Colors . They carry 3 or 4 shades of alumun that all look great. I apply them over a flat white primer coat… They dry quick look great and are a fast fix to an overall alum finish… With careful masking they also work well for panel highliting .Easier than the old airbrush…
I’m getting lazy. Good Luck

Thanks lion for the reply and thanks butchy for the tips.

The cockpit looks great mate. As for the alclad, the only tip I can give you is, make sure you let your primer dry for a fair while before you spray the alclad. I rushed my first one, and it affected the paint underneath. Good luck with it.

Good job on the interior, every detail stads out. Can’t wait to see the finished work!

Thanks bdelov and pingtang for the replys. Yeah I heard I should use an Acrylic gloss black and to let it dry for a few days. I’ll probably have to do some putty and sanding and hit it with the black again I’m sure.

Thanks again y’all.
