F-4EJ PHANTOM II to just an E

For planning purposes how much would be involved in converting HASEGAWA’s F-4EJ PHANTOM II to an F-4E only?

I want to use Eagle Strikes F4-Es Sharkmouth Easy Rockin Mama on this kit if the conversion isn’t to much of a hassle.

Thanks

Pretty much the same aircraft.

Thank you for the reply!

If you are building a non slatted version, they are the same. For a slatted version, no.

Hi Berny,

Thanks for chiming in!

My F-4F Phantom II West German White Horse is coming along nicely and I now want to prepare to build another F-4 this time an E.

Anyways, what do you mean by “slatted”?

Thanks

The F-4E/F/G had leading edge wing slats. This is what is refered to as “Soft Wing”. “Hard Wing” F-4 aircraft had leading edge flaps such as was on the F-4B/C/Dand F-4EJ. When the first E’s came out it was a “Hard Wing” aircraft and a modification was done later to install slats on them. Japan elected not to modify their F-4E aircraft and they were also building their own F-4E under licance and did not change their production line to have slats installed.

The Hasegawa 1/48 F-4E has wing sprue M with the wing slat actuators molded on the wing. The F-4EJ has wing sprue C without the actuators.

Best wishes,

Grant

Looks like all of the F-4EJ releases had sprue L for the nonslated wing, but some F-4E’s had either sprue L or sprue M (slatted wing). But for me I would consider who the viewing public would be, and go for it. Look here for what comes in the kits. http://modelingmadness.com/splfeat/kr/has48d.htm

Mike and Grant,

I appreciate the technical input and it is how I learn.

I Hope I can simplify this.

The Decals that I have are Afterburners: F-4E Double Ugly part II, Seymour-Johnson AFB. Wing and Squadron CO jets from the 4th TFW, 334th/335th/336th and 337th TFS, plus line jets. Stencils for 2 aircraft, all SEA and Euro I schemes from the late 80s. Sized for Hasegawa

Would anyone know which Hasegawa kit to buy for these decals?

Thanks

Those are slatted F-4E’s so the F-4EJ will not work as it doesn’t have the LES. Hasagawa makes a slatted F-4E though I don’t know if it is still in production. Check the on line hobby shops and see if they list it.

Thanks Berny!

The search begins.

Sprue Bros have both kit #'s 07208 and 09859 in stock that have the slatted wings. Big difference in price but both have the multi piece as well as the single piece canopy. But I’m betting the plastic is the same.

Mike

I have the Hasegawa 07208 kit with the slatted wing and 30th anniversary markings, but bought it before knowing about the slatted/non-slatted wings. Wish I had gotten one with the hard wing. [sn0ps]
