I’m trying to scare up some information on early model F-4D that the USAF armed with AIM-4 in place of AIM-9. It wasn’t very successful and the USAF switched back to AIM-9. Does anyone have a good close up of how the AIM-4 were loaded to the F-4D? I have some wide shots but nothing up close.
Thanks.
I have some help for you,it might not be enough, though
here is a shot of some kit parts,from old Hasegawa/Minicraft # 1085 1/72

it is parts 8, 9, 11, 12
here is the USAF page from the 1969 Phantom Weapons TO

and lastly, Detail & Scale Vol 43 had a photo on page 51

I don’t know what I did wrong, but, here is what I had as the first photo, before I messed up whatever I did
here is what Airfix Magazine had back in April 1970

I think I got it now, it shows in the preview

Sir,
The Falcon was mounted I believe on the inboard pylon in standard colors. Wait, I saw this on a F-4E, not the f-4D. This happened in April 1969 at Kunsan A B (K 8) S. Korea. The Phantoms were sent there after the N. Koreans shot down a Navy radar Connie over the Sea of Japan. A little history lesson, sorry for being long winded. I’ll try & research this.
F-100 John
they mounted exactly the same on the F-4E and the early F-4D
the same pylon was used, because the Falcon rails didn’t fit on the “Innerwing Missile Pylon with Stores Adapter”, they only bolted onto the “Innerwing Stores Pylon”
that is the difference between the “slanted early type” of pylon and the “rounded late type” of pylon, the USAF rails and adapters and etc were designed to fit the “rounded” type, designed from the onset to be a bomb pylon with various missile adapters and rails added to it for those missions (the slanted USN type was designed as a missile pylon, and then used adapters for other weapons),both pylon types were in use at least until 1969 on USAF aircraft (as were all three outerwing pylon types)
if you want a designation for Googling usage, the Falcon rails were:
L-41 and L-42 for the right and left side mounted rails, those were carried one on each pylon, they had a slight downward slant
L-43 for either side, mounted to the bottom of the pylon, they mounted with lugs, just like hanging a bomb on the pylon
