F-4 harnesses!?

Hi all.

I’m having a hard time figuring out how the safety harnesses of an F-4 Phantom rest on a seated and strapped-in pilot. I have found two photos on google that are better than nothing but are still somewhat vague. I am working on aires’ 1/48 resin and PE set on my monogram C/D kit.

I am confused as to whether the shoulder straps buckle into the waist strap buckle or into the the two straps that come out of the hole in the headrest (aires part PP2!). If they don’t buckle into those straps that come out of the headrest then I don’t know where they go at all.

Any help greatly appreciated

When in doubt arrange the harness like a 5 point race car harness.

Try F-4 or Phantom, someone has a thread covering your question.

The shoulder straps hook to Koch fittings on the top of the crewmember’s torso harness. They feed back through the opening between the top of the seat back and the parachute pack. There are similar belt fittings on the sides of the seat that also hook to the torso harness.

Also, do not forget that the Phantom uses Martin Baker ejection seats with “leg garter” straps that are designed to keep the pilot’s legs in close to the seat during ejections.

Here is a good pic of the Mk. H7 seat as installed in USN and USMC Phantoms…

You can see the shoulder straps, these hook onto the pilot’s flight gear in front of the shoulders, right where they look like they would. There is also the set of straps that hook across the lap. And of course, the leg garters go around the lower part of the leg, below the knee. The USAF seat, the Mk. H-7AF, is here:

Looks basically the same as far as the straps.

Thanks brothers. That helps a lot![Y]
