F-4 corsair color?

was there an F-4 corsair in olive drab?help needed,[B)]

Can’t say for sure that there wasn’t, but I’ve never seen one pictured in OD. Some Korean Corsairs were painted black & National Guard units flew them in Gull Grey.

I can’t recall any US Corsairs in drab. Maybe some foreign users? I recall one in a drab and gray camo scheme from the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve and one from perhaps Central America in a drab and tan scheme.

A Corsair in OD?.. never seen it, but as JWest21 said, there is a Corsair in Gray/OD cammo:

This scheme is with olive drab… If you want to view the full article:

If I ever saw a corsair in olive drab, I must be dreaming.

Rick,

Don’t think the Koreans or the National Guard ever operated the F4U Corsair but I believe both operated the A7

Quincey, Korean War Corsairs included F4U-4 & F4U-5. The National Guard units flew AU-1’s which were basically F4U-5’s, although with a different engine & a single stage supercharger. The F4U-7 was the last variant & I think all were in French service.

The Honduran Air Force flew the F4U in combat as late as 1969 in the brief “Soccer War” with El Salvador. I actually saw one of these birds as a gate guard at the main FAH base in Tegucigalpa, but I certainly don’t remember it as green, but then, it had been painted over several times by the time I saw it in '89. I do not remember the subtype. But if ever there was a green one, it was probably a Latin American bird.
As for the A-7 Corsair II, some ANG and AF Reserve units were flying their A-7D models in wrap-around lizard schemes similar to the old A-10 Europe scheme in the 80s, just before the were retired. Some A-7D units, toward the end, were also using a two-tone gray lizard scheme around that time. I remember seeing one in that scheme on the transient ramp at Ellington ANGB in Houston, and it was glossy. If I’m not mistaken, and I know I’ve veered off the question quite a way here, when the F-117 Blackbird program was still secret, and the squadron was posing as an A-7D unit at Nellis and flying those during the day for proficiency, they too were painted in a gray scheme. Oh, and I covered an A-7 crash in Ohio in, I think, '87, in which an AFR Corsair crashed into a hotel. The pieces of skin that were left were painted gray. But we were talking about F4U’s. Weren’t we?
Sorry.
TOM

I stand corrected on the Korean war Corsairs, I thought you meant Corsairs operated by the ROKAF (which to my knowledge they never did). Yes, the US Navy operated the Corsair in Korea and yes, a few of the nightfighter versions were operated in a black finish. I will disagree with the Air National Guard flying the F4U as the Air National Guard is part of the USAF and only operate USAF aircraft. The F4U was operated by Navy and Marine Reserve units (Guard and Reserve units are different animals and have different missions)

I remember reading something about the 'SOCCER WAR" and a Corsair that was purchased by one of the South American countries. It came from South Vietnam and was in the camo for that country. There is an article on the internet about this. It seems the plane never got off the ground on it’s only bombing mission and was turned into a gate guard at the airport in that country. I would search the internet for that.

Good Luck
