I need help from F-16 experts. The 1/32 Black Box cockpit set for the Tamiya kit has two HUDs. One is the WAR HUD and one is the standard HUD. What is the WAR HUD and is it used on the F-16CJ?
I’m not an F-16 expert but i thought I’d share a link with you where you might get some answers. I don’t know if you’ve been here yet but here goes: http://www.f-16.net/. Hope this helps.
can you post a picture of the two you are talking about.
There is no such thing as a WAR HUD on a real F-16 variant
Hey Berny,
To answer your question, there is a variant of the HUD called WAR. I found this on another form. Actually mentioned by bstrump. Tell ya the truth I totally forgot about this site until it was mentioned…
I am not too familiar with this particular. it appears that we did use it but also other Allied users as well. Maybe they favor the “WAR” HUD instead of the regulkar variant. I’ll give my cousin a line and ask him. I hope he knows b/c he flies em… LMAO…
Someone asked a question about the WAR and two 16 wrenchers answered:
Q: Any specialty with the WAR? Does it have any special functions or are these able to better support the use of LANTIRN pods?
A: The USAF used it because it could draw faster video from the LANTIRN system. Kinda like having a dinner plate-sized TV monitor right on top of the instrument panel. It also has a wider field-of-view than the collimated HUDs and may have better optical qualities when focused to infinity.
I’m guessing Korea and Singapore (and maybe others?) opted for it thinking they may get some kind of precision attack system in the future that would be optimized by using the WAR HUD vs. the collimated HUD.
2A: There are only three types of HUDs in production F-16s, the early ‘regular’ HUD and the later WAC and WAR HUDs.
I haven’t heard the Diffractive Optics (DO) term used for the WAR HUD, although that may well be part of the optical technology employed. The WAR HUD is capable of displaying raster imagery from the targeting pod in addition to the calligraphic (stroke) symbology in the HUD. The WAC HUD can only display the calligraphic (stroke) symbology.
Flaps up, Mike
Can’t add to anything said here, but I did come across these two different HUD styles for the F-16. I assume the wider display in the second pic is what you’re looking for.

Hope that helps.
Thanks every one. Now all I have to do is find out if the 52 FW at Spangdahlm AB Germany flew their F-16CJ with the WAR HUD. I don’t want some rivet counter telling me after I have built it that it has the wrong HUD installed.[V][:(]
well if its a CJ being a BLOCK 50 then it would be a standard hud. The F-16 CG or block40 uses the socalled “WAR HUD” never head them call it a WAR hud but i see now what you guys mean
WAR is Wide Angle Raster, and is used on USAF block 40/42 aircraft, but not on foreign users, ie. Israel. Black Box makes it in both their 1/48 and 1/32 sets, and it is available in 1/32 also in the Academy kit, though it is misshapen.
The things you need mostly for a block 40 is the WAR HUD, and the fuselage reinforcing plates. (available shortly)
BTW, the 52nd flies the block 50/CCIP…regular HUD.
Also, we would love to do a sheet with some Nellis camo jets on it. I sure wish somebody who was maybe, say, an F-16 crewcheif on a camoflaged Nellis jet would contact me so we could see about getting some shots of his jet to feature on an upcoming decal sheet. [:D]
Thanks again. The standard HUD it is.
SURE im looking for a sheet in 1/32" for my jet i’ll email ya now
