F-15 Color Needed

I plan on getting the Monogram 1/48 F-15C, and I know all of the F.S. #s for the Mad eagle scheme, cockpit, and most of the other details, but one has proved elusive. When the canopy is raised, the open area behind the cockpit (avionic bay?) is clearly visible but I am not sure what color is correct. My dad has an old Monogram instruction sheet and it says to paint the area gray-green. I vaguely remember seeing some models having it painted metallic blue. Can any of you guys tell me which it actually is? I would greatly appreciate an F.S. # and/or a Model Master color name. Thanks![8D]

It is a metallic blue green. Hasagawa instructions gives two numbers for it, these being # H 63 and # 57. Hope this will help you some.

Whaz up Rebel99,
Berny is correct on the aft avionics bay color. Model Master has a color called **interior Blue Green (SG-semi gloss)**that is close to the color that you are looking for.
Off hand I’m not sure of the exact FS no. but on the bottle it reads #2135.
Hopefully this can get ya on the right track Rebel
Flaps up,Mike

I can tell you first-hand experience from looking in the cockpit of a 1st FW 94th FS (Spads) at Langley last year that the color is flat black. Time and age has weathered it a bit, and you can mix in a little flat grey, but just a bit. Yes, it is an avionics bay, and was used for expansion of the “black boxes” for the aircraft over the years. It’s still pretty empty back there though in a C model. Apparently it generates a lot of heat back there too.

I can also attest that this is the color for that area of the F-15Es at Mountain Home, but I cannot attest to the colors other squadrons might be painting in that area. There is the possibility that the color varies, but for the ones I’ve seen up-close-and-personal, they are flat black. I also remember alot of bundles of wires in that area. Istis for the most part an analogue aircraft after all!

I just went through my pics to see if I photographed that area of the cockpit, but I didn’t have any. Much of the interior of the cockpit is also flat black (the instrument panels themselves), but the instrument frame (for which the panels drop into) is the same light gray as the outside of the aircraft (the lighter grey in the ME scheme).

Let me know if you need any other pics of the F-15C or E. I’ve some externals of the E (they wouldn’t allow me to photo the E in the cockpit), and I have both internal and external of the C, including good shots of the engine outlets.

At the 2003 Thunderbirds air show on March 22 at Tyndall AFB, I looked into the cockpit of several F-15C’s. All had the blue-green equipment bay. Only the F-15D and F-15E, which has a rear cockpit, were painted differently.

Thanks guys, that sure helped a lot! I figured it was metallic blue, but I wasn’t too sure. Better to be safe than sorry…[:D]
By the way, thanks Snacko. The color locations for the cockpit save a lot of time having to look all that up.
Take it easy guys!

Hello, I am returning to modeling after more than thirty years. My first kit is an F-15A, and I got stuck because I didn’t have the right colors for the cockpit. Everything I have read regarding the color of the cockpit, is the dark gull grey for the frames with black drop in IP’s. Then in the avionix bay, they were changed from the blue/green color, to flat white. The idea being white allows ground crews to see better at night because of white being a friendly reflection color for lights. I would love to see any pictures of the cockpit, as that is where I am stuck at the moment. How can I view your pictures? Thanks in advance, Anthony

Anthony,

Welcome back to the hobby. Unfortunately, this thread started 16 years ago and I don’t know if Anonymous and Snacko are still on the Forum. Unfortunately, Berny departed this realm several years ago, otherwise I know he’d be more than happy to help you. Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures of a F-15 to help. There are several good books that might provide the answers you need such as the Squadron F-15 Walkaround and I believe Detail and Scale did a book on it as well. There used to be a F-15 Eagle forum, but I can’t find it. Wish I could be of more help.

Ditto on the Squadron Walkaround book. Excellent resource.
