F-14A Colours

This is the colour key for my 1:72 Academy F-14A:

As you can see, it’s not very precise. For instance, the ejection seats are supposed to be “grey-green”

What are some colours and approximate locations for them on an F-14A? More or less I need a basic palette.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I know that the grey should be light gull grey.

go to this link, look at F-14 instructions until you either match up with your decals on a Hasegawa kit, or get the same overall scheme, then, that will give you the “Gunze and FS chart” for that aircraft

http://www.1999.co.jp/search_e.asp?Typ1_c=102&scope=0&scope2=0&itkey=F-14+Hasegawa

then, you can hunt down those colors on here http://www.paint4models.com/index.html or ask here on FSM for matches

Rex - You’re a proverbial life-saver. I think I have almost everything I need. [:D[

I need a Khaki Green for Vallejo paints. Any ideas?

you are going to want to check out chips yourself, but, here are my “F-4 Khaki Greens for cockpit details to replace Gunze numbers”

Vallejo Model Color 70873-142 US Field Drab

Vallejo Model Air 71029 Dark Earth (I have been told this one, but, have not tried it)

http://www.vallejo.nl/gb/assets/s2dmain.html?http://www.vallejo.nl/gb/vallejo/modelcolorchart/index.html

LifeColor UA016 Brown, this is the one I am using now,it is a “dark pea soup green” color, the physical paint chip I made from the paint is darker then LifeColor’s chip on the monitor

http://www.astromodel.it/lifecolor/colori-1/ua-016.html

glad to have been of help, keep that Hobby Search link and you can look up colors or markings for a lot of models, then use the charts,it makes it simpler and increases your time for building

Usually all US Navy aircraft starting with the F-4 Phantoms are painted Light Ghost Gray

Squadron Signal has several good books on the F-14 Tomcat, also Osprey Publications has a few good books as well

It also depends on how early on a F-14A you’re doing. I’m currently building a VF-1 Wolfpack F-14A. It has the bottom and control surfaces gloss white with the grey as mentioned on the upper surfaces. Some had the nose painted in Radome Tan as well.

just a “be careful” here on that LGG

LGG back then, in the 1955 up until TPS schemes came out, were Light Gull Gray, not Light Ghost Gray

believe me, I build that era, served during part of the end of it,and don’t like the “icky greenish shade” that real life Light Gull Gray had,I would throw out my 36440 LLG paints in a heartbeat if I could make the more Neutral 36375 Light Ghost color work

as it is, I have “cheated” on that color, I searched for every color labeled as 36440, and picked out the most Neutral appearing tint of it, snapped up that paint for my palette ,and claim “scale effect”, lol, don’t tar and feather me just yet,not until you’ve heard “my story” on Sea Blue Gloss (I don’t like that real color all that much, either),I did the same thing, looked at all the “matches”,and picked out the “bluest, with the least green” of them, and adopted that

for both colors, I can still say that “reference XYZ” called for it as a match

click profile #1 on this page, and look at aircraft #2, the DC tail code,

http://www.squadron.com/ProfileDetails.asp?item=AN72186

,that profile shows an aircraft with the old 36440 Light Gull Gray, and the new 16440 Light Gray (the name had changed between repaints),between the perceived fading and aging, and the different dates,LGG gave us a bit of leeway,so, I picked one, haha

I will be building that DC aircraft one day, when I get more USN done

cool shot, Medic

that is the Gloss Light Gray (16440) over Gloss White (17925) scheme, sometime around or in the few years after the Frequent Wind evac of Vietnam,If we could see a BuNo or two, we could know for sure what date

that cruise happened after the LGG name change to LG, and the change from “flat on top, gloss on the bottom” to “gloss all over”,I say 17925 because the often quoted 17875 is the “spec”, but, to make 17875 there would have been tinting agents added to the base paint, and that tinting was not authorized,so, all places that are quoted as using the off white 17875 really had to use the more pure white 17925

the white deal is something I wish I had known 20 years sooner, then the models from age 8 to 35 or so that I built wouldn’t have been as prone to yellowing as they turned out,the “purer white” is easier to keep from yellowing on the shelf, the models from 35 to 55 (current age) don’t show the yellowing

I think I’m going to go with the low visibility TPS colour scheme:

  • Dark Ghost Gray (FS 36320) on top,
  • Medium Grey (FS 35237) on “sides,”
  • Light Ghost Gray (FS 36375) on the bottom.

I got this from http://www.anft.net/f-14/index.htm and from an older FSM article about building a “Top Gun” F-14A.

I did my paint list last night. I need to buy 5 “greys.” I have 7 different “greys” in Vallejo paints and not one of them matches the ones I need. [bnghead]

The lucky/good thing is my wife is very supportive and I get to go to the LHS and pick up 13 more paint bottles for my stash. [:D]

I am planning on using Tamiya paints in my AB. The paint conversion chart calls for either XF-19 (Sky Grey) or XF-66 (Light Grey) for the FS 36375.

Which would be more accurate?

Thanks.
