F-100D Vietnam

I’m gathering materials and such for 1/48 scale F-100 flown by Maj. Don Schmenk (Thuy Hoa '69-70)

What are the FS#'s for S.E.A. Vietnam camo paint match? (i’ve been using model master paints) but any suggestions would be appreciated…THANKS a bunch!!

Years ago, Major Schmenk sent me a Monogram F-100 kit that included the markings for his aircraft. Kind of a long story, but here’s a link to the thread about my build. It might help a little; I don’t recall exactly which paints I used, probably some were MM enamels. I’ll check my “notes”, such as they are when I get home. Good luck with your build!

The FS#s on the the USAF Vietnam camo are: Dark Green 34079, Medium Green 34102, Tan 30219, and Camouflage Gray 36622

Hey Gary,

Thanks for the speedy reply! WOW! Great job on Maj.Schmenks “Hun” (Thought they were actual pics of the 1:1 aircraft!!) The burned/stained tail section is outstanding!. Long story short…I had the honor and privilege of meeting Maj. Don Schmenk 2 yrs. ago when I worked at the Port Aransas,TX. Post Office. I was working the window, when I saw this gentlemen come in with his wife.He was wearing a T-shirt w/ an F-100 drawing on it. I asked if was a “Hun” driver and he eladed “Yes” he was.He and his wife were vacationing down here in Port A “Winter Texans”(Snowbirds) we call them.I thanked him for his meritorious service and sacrifice. My best friend from my USAF days was stationed at Tuy Hoa

('69-'70) with the 31st TFW, he worked in the afterburner shop on base. I’m getting a little long-of-tooth,but your model shows his Hun armed w/ MK82 “low drag” bombs and “Daisey cutter” fuses.

Do you know if it would be correct to use “high drag” Snake-eye bombs w/ BLU Napalm canisters,as others have been armed?..I suppose it depended on the particular mission(s) that day…

I want to Thank You again for your story and a"superb" build…I will TRY to mirror your “Hun”

Hey Stikpusher!

Thanks for your speedy reply for the S.E.A. Camo paint specs. I’ve noted the colors and FS#'s

I appreciated your help…JohnZMan(“Fast Movers”)

You’re very welcome. I am a big fan of SEA aircraft.

Hey Gary, just looked at the link to your build; that’s a sweet looking Hun! I’ve got a few in my stash that are unbuilt and two that are ‘missing in action’ from a failed natural metal finish project from several years back…inspiring work!

Has anyone read “The Great Muckrock and Rosie?” It’s a good personal account of the author’s days as a Hun pilot in training and in Vietnam. Pretty interesting stuff; especially the “Misty” FAC portion of the book.

Thanks for sharing!

Dave

You are very welcome, and that’s a great honor for me! (I’m not worthy, lol!!) I don’t know much about ordnance however; I just happened to have those bombs and thought they were appropriate. Many members have so much more experience and knowledge of those, I’m sure they can answer your question.

That is so neat that you met Major Schmenk in person. I did speak with him on the phone and that resulted in him sending the kit, along with parts to convert the drop tanks (he said the kit tanks were not the correct size). I had this kit for years before I built it, and once finished, I sent Maj. Schmenk pics via email. He was so gracious and complimentary, a real officer and a gentleman! Do you happen to know if he’s doing okay these days?

best regards, Gary

Thanks Dave! Your comments are much appreciated!

Gary

A really excellent read is “Bury Us Upside Down” by Newman and Shepperd.

Strictly about the Misty operation.
