I am going to buy the Revell QM2 model…I have heard some horror stories about missing parts, and or broken parts. I am now building the Revell Gernmany Int Space Station. Upon getting this kit I immedietely did a complete inventory and all was present. However many of the smaller parts were broken, as it is not packed well for a model with so many fragile parts that will break.
Have any of you ship guys that have built the QM2 had any problems with this???
I am going to buy this from my internet dealer and tell them before hand if anything is missing, I immedietely ship it back to them for a new kit. Most of the time I can deal with a small broken part or 2, any major damage, it goes back.
I have not built the QM2. However, only one time did I ever not get a part with a Revell kit. I didn’t get the clear sprue with a P-51. I wrote them an old-fashioned letter, in nine days I had a clear sprue.
Revell always seem to use a more fragile plastic than most other manufacturers but the main problem is their insistence in using the ‘envelope’ style cartons. These have far less resistance to crushing than a two-piece box and are made of much thinner card so breakages are far more likely.
The QM2 comes in a two-piece box I believe and therefore should be better protected.
I have the kit, opened it and climbed through it, and there were no broken parts. Everything is packaged pretty well, but there isn’t any bubblewrap or other protecting material inside the box. With so many parts in the box, there isn’t much room for movement.
There will be a 1/400 photoetch set for the QM2 coming out from White Ensign Models. I suggest shooting John Snyder an email at wem@onetel.com , and he will give you the information on the PE. You can pre-order, which is great because they don’t charge you until they ship the PE, and the more interest in the PE from pre-orders, the faster it gets produced.
From what I have heard, the QM2 set from WEM has been shelved due to lack of interest. If you want one (or two) you should definately pre-order one from WEM. They need something like 50 definate orders to turn a profit on an item. If you can get 49 of your friends to go in on the order with you - then the priority goes up on the queue.
I would be interested in the photo etched. I’ve always used GMM on my Tamiya 350th ships. CVN 65 is spectacular, the radar could pass for the real thing if photographed properly.
Anyway I did hear that the Revell kit has pretty decent railings for an injected kit.
What is included in the p/e you speak of for the QM2??
I got an email last month from John Snyder at WEM, and he said that they are beginning the design work soon. They probably will make enough from the Hood PE to cover the QM2 PE!
I imagine the set will have photoetched railing in 4, 5, 6, and 7 rail configurations, doors, doorknobs, champagne coolers, interiors for each stateroom, and drains and filters for the pools, knowing Peter Hall and the ludicrous amount of detail they put into their sets (I am only joking about everything in the list after doors).
If you’re interested, email WEM. They’re good folks who will answer any questions you have.
Steelnavy just carried a message from Loren Perry of Gold Medal Models stating he was soon going to begin work on the QM2 PE fret. Loren is a huge liner buff (his Lusitania model is exquisite), so I am sure that his fret will be excellent also. Now I’ll have to buy two PE sets…
Hi George, I have built the Lusitania and it is a great model. I’m glad to hear that about GMM and Loren, I’ve been doing business with them for years. Great people and great product. Looking forward to doing the QM2 when I can schedule it in. probably Sept to Dec.
