Everything NASCAR discussion thread

I’ve ran into a few nascar fans here, figured I start a thread for everything nascar, race discussion, driver discussion, nascar models, tracks, you name it.
Starting off here are a couple kits I’m waiting to start on. Yeah yeah I’m a Larson fan

All star race today, kinda bummed they pause the fantasy league for the all-star race. Looks like keslowski has the pole.

I haven’t built a race car kit yet but when I do it’ll be a NASCAR kits so I was wondering how are these current NASCAR kits? I remember back in the 90’s when Revell/Monogram’s NASCAR kits were the best.

Ive got that Larsen kit as well. I have two bagged kits that I don’t recall which cars they are but I got Copenhagen sponsor decals for one and Miller Lite for the other.

And this one I picked up for a 10th anniversary build on another forum

I haven’t built one of the JR kits yet but I’ve only read really good things. They have a monthly model kit program I’ve always been interested in but I always talk myself out of it. They have Indy cars now which I’m interested in building.

I’ve got the Scott McLaughlin Penzoil Indy car. I’ve started it and paused after getting burned out on tons of carbon fiber decals. It’s my first Salvinos JR kit.

Looks good so far, I’ve got a few projects I need to finish and then I open my first jr kit.

Are the Salvinos kits just reboxed Revell/Monogram kits with new “extras” added or are they entirely new molds?

Loves me some nascar… friend works for one of the teams so have been lucky enough to get down and close!..

INDY CARB DAY
One of my bosses is a huge Indy 500 fan. He goes every year. For a few years, we have been using it as a schmooze activity for clients to take them to Carb Day and develop better relationships with them. I get to go this year (Friday) for the first time and am excitedly looking forward to it. I plan to take a ton of pics and will share with you all when I get back.

I have some NASCAR questions?

What is the difference between a good, bad mediocre driver
How are races won, does the car make that much difference
Is there a strategy

Football, baseball, basketball, even hockey I get the strategy

Help me understand NASCAR, even Grand Prix

Thanks

That’s awesome, I gotta make it to race one of these days. No tracks where I’m at so gotta make a vacation out of it.

Nice! Looking forward to the pictures!

Those are very complicated questions to answer, the race is points based so different positions gives you different points and the points add up throughout the season and the highest point holders make it into the last few races being the playoffs, the cars make a difference but how the cars are driven is just as or more important. track position in and out of turns, clean air ( running in the front of the pack) vs dirty ( running in the back of the pack) makes the engine run different, team work, how the car is adjusted, tire pressure, track heat, track condition, tire condition, you can slow another car down by using the wind off of your own car, how fast the pit crew is, then there is strategy, when and if to pit, new tires, fuel, it’s literally a very detailed and complicated sport. I know I didn’t answer any of your questions :joy: but there is just so much to everything and I’m not sure how to explain it. Maybe someone else can help out here.

The All Star “Race” was a real snoozer. Ever since the “Car of Tomorrow” stock car racing has been less than stellar and FOX’s coverage of NASCAR this year has been awful. NASCAR’s meddling has been a hindrance as well. I’ve been following NASCAR since the 1960’s. I went to my first Daytona 500 in 1970. I guess stock car racing peaked in the 1980’s. The cars and engines were more interesting and the drivers were way more colorful. I hope the next half of the racing season is better now that FOX will be in the rear view mirror. It would help too, if NASCAR broadcasts were aired uninterrupted by lame commercials. Formula 1 and Sky Sports/ESPN have the right idea, broadcasting their races flag to flag with no interruptions.

I do plan to build at least one Salvino’s kit this year. Maybe this car:

That Monte Carlo is so cool. I really like the older body styles of the 70’s & 80’s NASCAR series.

My 2 cents - and I’m not a super NASCAR fan but really love the last 10 laps.
Car setup is critical depending on the track. Down to where the fuel pickup is in the tank, tires, suspension etc. I met a guy who was doing promotion work for one of the teams and he had a 3 or 4 year old car in a trailer. He noticed are cars up on trailers heading to a track day - overnighting at a hotel. He opened up the tailer and let us crawl around the car and told us about setups for different tracks. Then he started the car in the box trailer! That was pretty awesome though I think I lost about 2% hearing
Second is race managment as mentioned above as well. Fule, tires etc. Same in F1 and Indy etc.
Third is the insane ability of a driver to drive the car at the edge of being out of control. You notice in auto racing that the winning drivers hang around at the top for years - they’ve got something the others don’t and I don’t pretend to understand it… but it’s a bit nuts.

EDIT: I’d have to say a lot if it is driver mostly because a good driver will get on a really good team with a great crew.

yeh the FOX coverage has been awful, CW did pretty good with Xfinity and truck though.
