Everything is "GO"! Mercury Capsule and Atlas Booster

Just finished this difficult to build kit. It took much longer than anticipated. I’ll need to find a better place to display it. While not 100% accurate…it’s good enough for me!

Looks like you’ve done a great job with it. I have this kit in my stash. Hope it will turn out as good as yours!

I think that you did a fantastic job on this project. It looks so good and it makes me realize how old I am now.

Looks great. It’s not a kit that I am familiar with. Is that Alan Shepherd’s Mercury?

Yes, not Glenn…my bad.

How did you get the yellow to come out so good? Yellow and white are two of the hardest colors for me to get nice even coverage.

Is this the Atlantis kit? Very cool.

The reason the yellow looks good is because I didn’t take any close up pics! Yellow is a pain for me too. I cleaned the parts, removed what mold lines and blemishes I could, primed with white primer, then laid on several light coats of yellow Testors enamel. Some parts came out well, others not so much. I think the primer really helps. I used Mr. Surfacer white primer, but I doubt the brand of primer matters much. Thank you for your kind comment.

I think this was the original Revell\Monogram kit, but I’d have to look at the box again to make sure. I do have 2 of the Atlantis repop kits in my stash that I’ll get rid of at some point. Thanks for your comment.

No, Alan Shepherd and Gus Grissom flew on the Mercury Redstone rockets, which was a smaller type and only flew suborbital.

Mercury Atlas on the left, Mercury Redstone on the right.

What a spectacular build, looks like it would have definitely been a tough one.
