Ever build a model for your wife?

So my wife’s birthday was just here a few days ago and because of this, that, and another thing I wasn’t able to get her what she asked for.(Yet)

So when she mentioned offhand while looking at my Mirage 2000 I was working on about how she had really liked that F4U Corsair she built in high school, a light went on! I yanked the Academy 1/72 kit out of the stash and had it built, painted and decaled in a day and a half.

The smile on her face lit up the room.

I have not yet, but that is a good idea. And a better story! Glad you made her day!

I am currently building a dinosaur for my youngest daughter. And I built a Star Destroyer for my son.

What part of the Mit are you located?

I have built three cars now for the Mrs.

She is quite enamored with all things police related. I built a Chicago cop car, a Alaska State Trooper SUV and her favorite personal car, a lime green Camaro.

They are proudly displayed in the bedroom.

No, but several for her father.

My wife loves Porsche’s. I’m a plane guy (in more ways than one…), but I actually kit-bashed a couple of 911’s together to get a model of the slope-nose droptop 911 she had on a poster in her dorm room. Drove up to deliver it in a blinding snowstorm on Valentine’s Day. Had the engagement ring in the trunk. She was looking the model over, and I told her “the trunk lid comes off…” and she said “awww…you even left a map case on the seat.” “Yes…and the trunk lid comes off.” Couple of ooohhhs and ahhhs later and me asking her to take the lid of the trunk finally revelaed the ring. The next 30 seconds of silence were the longest I’ve ever encountered. Then she said yes. The model ended up as our cake topper.

This June is the 25th anniversary of the best move I’ve ever made!

For quite a few years, I built her a Porsche for our anniversary. So…yeah. I have [:D] Highly recommended.

My wife loves the 60’s Mustangs…built her three (1/16 hard top, 1/24 convertable and 1/24 fast back). I also built her a tiny “pirate ship”…all were destroyed by the only cat we (and by “we”, I mean she!) ever had…proving my point that our (and by “our”, I mean my[:P]) house is no place for a cat!

Cats are bad…m’kay!

Mine’s only hinted that I build a VW Bug with freekin’ flower pedels on it…Jeez! For tha love of God!

Hmm. Never have but she currently owns a 96 Trans Am. If I could find a model of one.

Never could find her a kit of the old Nash Metropolitan before she passed, so no, she never wanted the Lindbeerg kit of her 96 S-10 Blazer…Have done 4x4 kits for at least 4 past officers in our 4x4 association… couple of different body style full size Blazers, a CJ-5 and a Jeep Commando.

Is this close enough Johnny?

yes it is. Same body style. Guess I know what I’m buying tonight

Great stories guys but I love yours Chuck!!!

Yup. She was a big fan of both Babylon 5 and Star Trek Voyager, so I built both the space station and the ship.

She broke both of them. [:#]

These days, I just buy her a book.

C’mon Mustang; man up and do it for the love of your life! As my daughter is SOOOOO fond of reminding me, “Happy wife, happy life!”

Sort of. In the last couple of years she has taken to buying me models, but one she likes. If i was to build one just for her, i think it would have to be a horse.

I can’t say I have ever built one for a gift, or if I ever will, but when she is nice enough to buy me a kit, I let her pick out the decals/scheme that she likes and that’s how I do it.

I built mine one of those doll houses from a kit once when we were dating. Afterwards she bought me the 1/96 Revell Constitution kit. Although not built specifically for her, it did wind up being the showpiece in our livingroom for 15 years so i guess she liked it. Then the cat got tangled up in the rigging. That ended poorly.

Yep, I do both plastic and scale balsa stick and tissue, all old classics. She likes the looks uncovered, so I built her a 30 inch Stearman from Herr Engineering, accurate and beautiful kits. I had found the blueprints of the real Stearman, so I made the scale structure which really livens up the appearance.

Made basically a full winter project of it, it’s displayed on top of her favorite tall antique furniture piece. Once she came to me with such a sad look, she had taken it down to dust it and a few bits broke off.

“Can you save it?” A few minutes, some temporary pins and glue, all better.

She has a private pilot license, we went to many airshows, the Stearman was always her favorite airplane, so I get how significant the model was for her. I enjoyed all of the build even more so.

I built a few for my adult kids, with display cases- something to remember the old man by, when I am no longer here. They both loved them!

We were redecorating the den in a “Beach Theme”. Lighthouses around the edge of the ceiling, faux slate flooring, fish net hanging on the wall with shells “caught” in it, beach scenes in frames on the walls. She said a model sailboat would look nice in there too. I gave her the ship catalogs I had and she picked out the “Scottish Maid” from Artist in the Latrine. Took me 2 years to finish it and also had to make a shelf for it. She had me mount it right near the door so everyone can see it. The ship and the shelf are my avatar.
