I’m normally a ship and armor builder but a friend recently asked me to build the AMT USS Enterprise ‘Star Trek VI Undisicovered Country’ kit for him. I’m looking at this large, basically completely white ship and I’d like to be able to break that up at least a little bit. I’ve seen some of the aztec mask sets for the on the internet but I’m not really sure I want to spend the 40 or 50 dollars on some thing like that. Is there a method that anyone has used to give this kit, particularly the disc, some visual interest? Thanks in advance.
Aztec Dummy sells a set of paint masks to do the aztec pattern. I think they are around $30.
You put down the base color, apply the masks, then add the top coat. I’ve never used his aztec masks, I have used his other masks and they are a very high quality.
They are available many places on line, I tend to use culttvman.com.
Just make sure you get the masks for the correct scale. their are multiple scales available.
Good luck and post photos!
And you can mask the thing off yourself. It’s just an insane amount of work. [:XX]
Remember, this is a kit that was made in 1979 and retooled a few times. The first retool added the trench-like rough surface texture. I believe the ST V version added the tiny shuttlecraft.
Starship Modeler has many builds of this classic kit. http://www.starshipmodeler.com/trek/cz_ertl_refit.htm
And a high quality painting guide. http://www.starshipmodeler.com/trek/enta_paint_guide.htm
Thanks for the info. I went looking for the Aztec Dummy masks and they appear to be out of stock everywhere. I did find a set from HDAmodelworx. They are about the same price as the Aztec Dummy ones. Do you have any experience with the brand or know anything about them? For the record this kit is 1/537.
I just bought a decal set from HDA. I’m very impressed with the look of them, but I have not used them yet.
They were fast if that helps.
You might try Federation models for teh Aztec Dummies set. I used them on my NX-01 and they worked without any trouble.
Thank you all for the advice. I ended up ordering the ADH set and just got a shipping notice today. I will try to post my thoughts when it arrives and when I use them. Again, thank you
