Elmers Glue airbrushed as a flat finish?

I would like to know if anyone here has ever tried airbrushing Elmer’s white glue as a flat finish after decaling thier model and what results you got. I am trying to steer away from using any clear oil base or laquer enamel finishes on a current project ( F/A-18C ). I have brushed Elmer’s on engine pipes to get a flatter finish and I’m figuring since I am planning to using water base acrylic paints and seeing how Elmer’s white glue is a water base glue I would like to know if anyone has tried it? I want to use this as an over-all finish to sealing paint and decals. What do you all think?

Thanks in advance,

Air Master

Go for it! and please post pics - i don’t wanna miss it! Honestly though, it has recipe for disaster written all over it. it simply does not have the bonding strength that a more made for the job clear coat would. It would form more of a milky film that would turn white every time it got really humid or wet (it does not dry to a water proof finish you can always dissolve it)! Tamiya, and gunze make incredible acrylic clear coats, and even better (in my opinion) is future floor wax - look in the painting forum theres more there than you can read in a week.

Maybe you’ve tried this, but iof you can get your hands on Polyscale Clear Flat (acrylic), it is worth a try. Of all the “dullcote” type products I’ve tried, Polyscale’s blows them all away. Of course, this is just the opinion of one modeler.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I wont be trying this after all seeing how the potential for disaster is. Guess I’ll stick with tried and true methods, anyway it was just a thought.

Thanks again! [:D]

i have to agree with mucker about the polly sclae stuff i usually dont flat coat my planes since i like to have nice shinny cag birds. but its the best for flat coating and you can spray it right out of the bottle not thining required and clean up is a brease just run water thru your air brush.the only thing i have found out for emlers gule is guling the canopy inplace and filling small seams.

Another vote for Polly Scale Flat acrylic. Best dead flat I’ve ever used. They also make a Satin if you want a little more shine.

Regards, Rick

Tamiya and Gunze both make clear coats, but of the two, only Gunze has a flat clear “out of the bottle”. You need to add Tamiya’s “flat base” to to their clear gloss to make it “flat”.Gunze’s flat clear can be sprayed unthinned and goes on silky smooth.

I just can’t imagine blowing glue through a perfectly good airbrush!
