Does anyone know how many track links should be used for Dragon’s Sd.Kfz.184, kit number 6126,1/35th scale? There are heaps in the kit and it would give me a headstart if I knew how many would give the right fit.
Thanks

I wish I new, but I hated them so much that I purchased some DS tracks from their Porsche Tiger just to finish this build. Good luck.
The links are paired, meaning that there’s a “toothed” link and an “non-toothed” link that go together to construct the track. You will need approximately 54 pairs to construct each track run, but you should test fit carefully to avoid being caught with too much or too little sag. HTH.
As Bill said, it will be somewhere in the area of 54-55 pairs…you are always best off using however many you need to get a good fit. Very few people will actually count the number of track links - while everyone will notice if the fit is wrong.
Ozmod - According to 'Tiger & King Tiger Tanks" by Walter J. Spielberger, the Elephant had 109 links (counted from the scale drawings). According to the book, the track width was 640 mm with a pich of 130 mm (track type Kgs 62/640/130). I don’t know if this will help you but that’s my [2c].
OZMOD - is that a Modeler from the Land Of OZ?[(-D]
The drawings aren’t correct in that regard, it’s impossible to have an odd number of links due to the paired nature of the track. That means it would have either 108 or 110 links, not 109. [;)] When I built my DML kit using MK replacement links, the number came to 54 pairs or 108 links and produced the correct sag front and back.
Sorry but to repeat what it says in the book on page 204, No of links per track… 109. This for the Tank Hunter Tiger (P) Elephant. Also the Tiger (P) Recovery Tank had 109 links as well. All Porsche designs had 109 links.
The Tiger I had 96 links and the Tiger II 92 links …again per track.
That book is wrong on this point…that’s like saying a Jeep has 3 wheels. The Ferdinand/Elefant used a 2-link design, one type with a guide horn and four hinge points, the other with no guide horn and only three hinge points - quite similar to T-34 tracks. They have to be alternated, or they won’t connect. 108 or 110 is the correct number.
The best practice for fitting tracks is to find out how many is the right number, then adjust the idler wheel if you can to get the proper fit with the proper number of links. However, if you can’t adjust the idler, you shouldn’t worry about the proper number at the expense of good fit.
