I’ve just bought Dragons 1/72 Elefant. Does any one out the have some color scheme suggestions? I don’t want a monotone panzer yellow tank.
Thanks,
Fletcher
Good luck, I posted a thread before and got little response. I have no problems finding Ferdy camos, but Elefants are harder. If you’d like, you may join our Elefant Group Build in progress. The camo is hanging up my build right now.
Try this. Towards the bottom, right hand side.

Many Elephants started as Ferdinands so I suspect the camo is the same for both. Ther are two polish books out that cover these vehicles in detail and have colour schemes. I have one of them, but I’m 3000 miles away from my references at the moement or I would say what the book is called.
Pete, you are correct, sort of anyway. The picture says Ferdinand and Elefant, but if you look closely, they have no bow machine-gun (Elefant) and have headlights (Ferdinand). So, I’m stumped, but agree with 72 builder. My concern is when they went to the factory to be converted, did they receive a new camo scheme? I have no answers.
here is a site that has two pictures of a destroyed Ferdinand at Kursk. The first photo definately has camo over that sand colour. Not sure if the other is more from being burned out.

sorry its in french.
Sorry, no help on camo, however i will warn you right now, do not use enamals on the vinal tracks, they will only take waterbase such as tamiya or polly scale. THe enamals react with something in the track, and they never dry. A huge mess.

Elefants had the three colour swirly camo too, like on the Dragon box art
Yes they did. Did they have just a two-tone, like green patches over yellow?
Thanks guys! Those photos are really neat.

Do a Kursk version with D. yellow and green .[8D]
USSFletcher,
I have tried to scan the color plates from Munch’s History of Schwere Panzerjager Abteilung 653, but I only get B/W. I’ll try to describe the camo schemes and the years used.
All have the dark yellow base coat.
1 May 1943 shows the vehicle W/O zimmerit and just yellow base coat.
2 July 1943 shows blotchy dark green lightly applied over the yellow base color also W/O zimmerit
3 July 1943 also shows large green blotches with thin lines of red brown between the green & yellow, like a shadow of trees on the ground
4 Sept 1943 Shows the yellow base color with the red brown “giraffe” web pattern and some small green patches
5 Sept 1943 also shows yellow base with red brown patches
6 May 1944 shows yellow with whispy streaks and spots of green with zimmerit applied. Vehicles are now drawn as Elefants with cupola and bow MG.
7 May 1944 also show equal parts yellow, green and red brown, not heavy patches like ambush pattern and soft edge
8 April 1945 shows yellow base with small blotches and streaks of green and red brown. About 1/2 yellow and 1/4 green 1/4 red brown, zimmerit no crosses or ID numbers
Let me know if you need more info maybe I can scan one and draw in arrows to the colors. I guess this is the reason I need to buy a color scanner? I’ll ask SWMBO for the propper approval, if not I’ll get MR IT(techie) son to push for it with her.
His book says that Hitler was the main force behind the name change to Elefant, but the crews continued to call them “Ferdy’s” to the end.
Hey Jim, if you could scan them, that would be great. Mine has the zim, so the ones that pertain to it might help me out. As long as I can see the pattern, the color isn’t necessary. Thanks.
Guys
These may be of help to you
