Eduard Fw 190 D-9 Work In Progress

I’ve been posting here and there about some of the different areas of this model I’ve been working on, however it’s time to put it all together and do a Work In Progress posting. This is likely to be an extended version, as my construction methods are not fast, and the time I have to devote to modeling is no plentiful.

The subject is Hans Dortenmann’s “Yellow 1”:

I really like that this was the longest service “Dora”, and the stories accompanying it from the pilot add color. It’s possible that I’ll change the scheme where it’s “Black 1” or “Red/Orange 1” with only the rudder yellow, but for now this is what I’m going with.

In full disclosure, I started this model for Daywalker’s “Reich Defender III” Group Build, however that was a miserable failure from me; there was no way I could finish in time. Yet, I’m still plugging along on this kit, looking forward to seeing it on my shelf.

Since this has been in progress for nearly a year so far, this story won’t be in the normal order that you would expect. Today’s installment will focus on the work that went into dropping the elevators.

As a bit of background, I wanted to reposition at least some of the control surfaces. I’m using the Eduard flaps and will have them dropped a bit, but felt the need for a bit more. Between the rudder or the elevators, I chose the elevators. I’ve got a lot of reference material on the 190, and I don’t see a particular trend as to what the elevators look like on the ground. Mainly, I see a pretty even mix of neutral, lowered or raised. So, speaking to a couple of my colleagues who are pilots, they say it’s usual for the elevators to drop when on the ground, and in the absence of hard evidence to the contrary in reference materials, this is what I decided to go with.

That also meant there were two changes that had to be made: The elevators have to be dropped, and the control yoke had to be positioned forward. Going into this, I had imagined that repositioning the yoke forward would be the hardest part. Not really - dropping the elevators wasn’t easy either.

The Elevators

This was my first attempt at the procedure. Thankfully I had a few extra pieces left over from my 190 A build that just recently concluded. In the end, the best fortune I had was using the excellent Mission Models scriber to deepen the panel lines and a trusty Xacto to clean up the end points. Then half round strip was cemented to the elevator and after drying was filed and sanded till the shape was correct.

At the same time, a groove was cut into the back of the fixed part of the elevator, firstly with the JLC saw, depend with the JLC scriber and then filed more till a groove was apparent. There was some matching necessary, but eventually this is what I came out with:

Overall, I’m pretty happy with how that came out. By no means perfect, yet pleasing to my eye.

The Control Yoke

The 190 has a rubber boot at the base of the control yoke covering the mechanism that actuates the control rods. In the Eduard kit, there is just a big rubber boot attached to the floor. In the documentation I have, and this photo from the National Museum of the United States Air Force, you can see a pipe coming to the base of the control yoke and that the boot doesn’t go directly to the floor:

In fact, you can also see that there is what looks like a square cross section under the boot. In one of the Eagle Editions books that shows an abandoned D-9 cockpit, you can see the second pipe going aft under the seat. So in addition to rebuilding the boot so that the column could go forward, I also needed to build the pipes and space the boot above them.

For the boot itself, I used alternating sized discs that were produced with my punch and die sets. I’ve got three different versions: The Waldron Sub-mine, another set that aren’t very good (and I can’t recall who made them) and the new set from CB Model Products. It took a few times to get something that I liked.

As I punched each disk, I also sanded off the “front” corner, so that as it was stacked up it had a forward “lean”. For the stick itself, I used the portion from the Aires Fw 190 A-8 set that was originally intended for use with this kit. (What a joke - it’s simply the exact same set designed for the Tamiya A-8 - there would have been major trouble getting it into this kit).

While it’s apparent that there is a difference in overall height between the stock Eduard and my new concoction, I’m happy with it. If you look carefully at the main areas of the column, there aren’t a lot of differences in the proportions.

So, there you have it. I’ll continue to update this post with new work as it’s done. And I’ll do a better job of showing real in progress photos - the end product isn’t usually very satisfying.

Talk to me! There are a million things I’d ask, but the priority is the bulkhead / cockpit fit. I most recently finished a Eduard Fw 190 A-8, and had boatloads of trouble with the wing root fit.

I read an article on ARC where the fellow says that you have to ignore the cockpit, and just go with the “firewall” and fuselage sides, and to leave the cockpit loose until the firewall and fuselage sides are cemented and dry.

I had assumed, when building my A-8, that the cockpit was trustworthy, a d used that as the primary alignment guide. So, that may well be the cause of the problems.

What was your experience? Pleas do tell!

Nice work and WIP—a little picture heavy on the elevator but this is looking good…

Mike, Yes, follow that ARC article, the most critical spot is the bulkhead forward of the cockpit, the one ahead of that, and also you must correctly align the exhaust inserts all at the same time. Then where ever the cockpit sits it sits…Got it? lol! I did the same thing you did, glue cockpit first, after all, it has obvious locating marks. but then nothing else forward of it lined up, close but no cigar. So follow the article, also, at the same time make sure the windshield will fit on the fuselage. Then the gun cowl, it fit ok but I added a spreader bar inside it to make it line up perfect, as I was closing it all up. My wing root fit was decent, but needed a little strip styrene in one corner. Odd because nothing was crooked and there was still a gap? Not sure if you’ve gotten to the prop yet, but I went with an MDC resin prop, along with wheels. Eduards prop blades need trimming at the blade shank so they clear the radiator cowling. Also, the blades themselves might be too wide. Good luck keep us updated with pics.

Wow, looking at the date I’m really surprised how much time has passed since I first started this post. One of the big delays was figuring out where I wanted to have my pics hosted (decided on Flickr), but that’s not a good excuse.

In any case, I’ve been working sporadically on the 190, mainly due to travel. One thing I did was find a good resin replacement for the VS 111 prop. Thanks for reminding me of that Nathan T! I had been thinking about it, yet your recommendation made me get off my rear and find/order one. I settled on the AML replacement. It was a very easy transaction, paid by PayPal and it was delivered in less than two weeks - nice!

The replacement prop is quite nice, have a look:

It’s very nicely done, especially the double row of rivets midway around the spinner.

Here are a couple of pics of the cockpit before paint. There are still a few details to go, however this is mostly complete.

This isn’t a huge update, however I’m hoping to have more to share soon. I’ll be traveling again soon, but to keep my mind focused on modeling I’ve got a special trick. I keep a small set of basic tools in my “field office” if you will, and last time I was out there, bought a Weekend Edition of the Eduard 190 D-11 (or D-13, I can’t remember exactly) and I’m going to assemble it with no paint at all.

It’s something nice to do in my hotel room in the evening, and it will give me a good chance to put the advice on assembly to good use, an not on my project. I’ve been doing that for a while now, and it’s a nice modeling diversion to put something together in a week - even if it’s only in bare plastic. I highly recommend it as a way to “freshen your palate” so to say.

Nice update Mike. Didn’t know AML made a resin prop replacement, should be much better than trying to make the kit one work. Can’t wait to seem some paint on that cockpit.

It’s been too long since I have updated this WIP posting… Firstly, I had to restore the missing images from the first post; MobileMe has since bit the dust. But I have all of the photos moved to Flickr now, and wanted to show you some of the more recent progress.

First of all, here’s the completed cockpit, minus dashboard - more on that soon though:

I used Testors acrylic flat and semi-gloss mixed to finish the cockpit, but for some reason it turned the seat belt buckles a strange tarnished color. It’s not too bad, but kind of a bummer. Lesson learned: buckles after final finish. If the belts need anything, then it will be done by hand.

If you are wondering what the cut off rods around the rudder pedals are, these are intended to simulate the linkage that the pedals are connected to. And on the very right of the cockpit are two fluid lines that are somewhat prominent in photos of the real thing. All of this is going to be barely visible, but I’m still hoping they will contribute to the generally busy appearance of the cockpit. This is what the pedals & linkage look like mocked up (the while plastic is only there to hold them up):

So the next part was the “lower” part of the dashboard, the engine instruments. The first challenge was the color, a similar problem to the side panels. The Eduard RLM 66 just doesn’t match the Testors. It’s a moot as to which one is correct; they do need to match. On the side consoles, I masked the details with liquid mask and oversprayed with thinned color. While not great, it’s better.

In terms of the dashboard, the other main problem was the missing “flare tube” on the upper right corner. My reference photos show a definite tube that leads outside of the aircraft right above the oxygen insruments. So using some of that wonderful Albion Alloys tube, I made one, painted the dash and assembled it. However, I was pretty unhappy with the result, no doubt influenced by the fact that I damaged it in handling. (The visible part is pretty thin, and doesn’t like to be handled too much) Here’s a couple of shots of the first attempt:

There were two things I didn’t care about the Eduard parts that I decided to fix: The roundish handles (they are pretty flat with lables on them facing the pilot) and the instrument faces.

The handles were fixed with small rod & thin brass strip finished off with Airscale placards in a somewhat convincing fashion. The last detail was rivets from “The Nutter” from Small Shop.

The instrument faces were improved with decals from Airscale too. They didn’t quite fit the space left by Eduard, with enough prodding they look OK. The last part was using the clear acetate to simulate glass. On a side note, I’m always torn between using a clear liquid of some sort or acetate. In this case, the acetate looks all right, to my eye.

That dashboard, twice, was a good weekend’s work! Long term, I’m starting to believe that the best way to handle the cockpit would be to do individual details; photoetch has it’s limitations. And I despise the gap between the side panels and the plastic - the real thing had pressed sheet metal there, a curved part. Not two, glued together. Food for thought for next time!

The next component standing in the way of closing the canopy was the engine “plug”. I had built and painted it with a shot of Tamiya smoke as oil. However, looking at the area in reference photos shows lots of cables and fluid hoses.

First off, I don’t want to get into the argument as to whether this area was open or closed - there are a lot smarter people than me who have debated it. My choice is to show it open, right or wrong. Secondly, trying to match up line for line would have been nearly impossible at this point. My theory was to try to make it look convincing, as Shep Pain once wrote “simulate reality”. So I started drilling and fishing wiring in. When I thought I had enough, I started over again. And again. Not nearly rivet counter accurate, but it looks busy. Here are a few shots:

One other detail that I wanted to clean up compared to my last finished model, an Eduard Fw 190 A–8, is the later mounting of the cowl mounted MG 131 barrels. The cowl will be closed, and as I’m using Master replacements, and they need to be supported somehow. The A–8 ended up with them basically laying in the trough - not acceptable. So this time, I cut some brass tube and installed it on the backside of the cowling so that the barrels can slid into them. This should provide a much more positive locating method:

Nice work mike! Long time no see!! great cockpit, your extra details are definitely worth it. Looks like you got the fuselage closed up no probs. I’m building another dora over here: http://sparforums.com/ipb/index.php?/topic/2233-a-dora-and-a-tank/. Feel free to look and maybe it can help you, although I think you got her under control! You’ve got a LOT of great work done Mike! I really like the cockpit work and the job on mounting the nose machine guns! Very nice touch!!! Keep up the good work!!!

Looking good Mike. I wrestled with this kit back in September. I won’t sugar coat it, the kit is way over engineered and nothing short of torture trying to get the front end to fit. It got banished back to the box several times. This turkey has pretty much soured me on Eduard kits and it will be along time before I give another one a go (I have three more in the stash). That said, the surface detail was exquisite and If you can muscle through the aggravation, you’ll be rewarded with a nice Dora. I’ve included a link to my work in progress of it. Maybe you’ll find some of my experiences with it useful.

I am enjoying your build log and looking forward to your take on the kit. I have one for the up and coming 190 group build and have pretty much planned on doing the same markings. Will leave the mg cowl open on mine though. Awesome work on the pit area!
