Editing posts

I am a tinkerer. I post something, then I read it, and go back and make corrections as necessary.

However, whenever I post something and then fix it (typos, brain farts, things I forgot to add, etc.), the message says that I’ve edited it. I wonder if that makes readers suspect that I’ve cut something out after they’ve initially read it.

I am on another board that handles it this way: if you post something, and then fix it, the only time that the “edited” message comes up is if someone else has posted something in the meantime. In other words, If I start a thread, and go in and fix a typo, it won’t show up as edited unless someone else has posted a response. Same goes for responses – my edits don’t bring up the “edited” message unless someone has subsequently posted a response.

Oh, the shame, the SHAME of an “edited” message. [:P]

Just for your consideration.

(Look below – I’ve done it again!)

It’s a valid point. I think the reason it’s done this way is because it is a way to let anyone know that changes have been made since they last read the post (regardless of anyone replied). The problem is we don’t know if the change was a matter of typos, edits and corrections, additional information or removal of information. What I’ve seen people do when they make edits is to add a line at the bottom like this [edit: corrected typos] or [edit: corrected link].

Is there a way of spell checking a post before sending it. I have a slight case of dislexia and need all the help I can get.

And now the edits are in BOLD so they really draw the eye! Oh the increased shame! The increased shame!

Another concern I have is that if I edit something, it bumps that topic back up to the top, with my name on it as having posted last, even if the post I edited was nowhere near the end of the thread. People will expect to see an entry by me (or whoever edited), perhaps expecting an answer or something, only to find that that is not the case.
No big whoop, but a slight concern.

Exactly. The other board I am on (oh how Larry goes on about his other board) doesn’t move you back to the top just because you’ve edited. People there used to edit their messages, ever so slightly, to bump their thread back up to the top, and it annoyed people.

I’ve been guilty of doing something like that before. [:I]
(every once in awhile though…)

I’ll keep it in mind. Really, I will. [:)]
