I am considering building an early MK I Hurricane with the fabric wings and two-bladed wooden prop, pre-war of course. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a kit? I saw that squadron has a Has.MK I kit with Romanian decals available, so I will probably go that route. As for aftermarket details, what would you do to bring the Hurricane to all its glory?
Great Models also has several Mk 1 Hurricanes, along with early decal sheets. Some are not in stock at the moment, but at least you’ll get an idea of what’s out there.
Meteor Productions also has some Mk 1 accessories, including a PJ Production resin Watts propeller. Just go to meteorprod.com and do a search for Hurricane.
Search around, I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for.
I believe the Hasegawa Mk.I kits are the later version. The only eary Mk.I kit with fabric wings in 1/48 that I can think of is the Classic Airframes kit. If you can find one, it’s a very detailed kit that doesn’t really require much in the way of AM. Not a shake & bake kit though, a pretty tough build.
You did not mention what scale you were interested in. The Classic Airframes 1/48 kit is very nice. It is the early version with the fabric covered wings and two blade prop. They are a bit of a challenge due to lack of locating pins and all of the resin parts have those annoying pour stubs to remove but once you get past that they build up rather nice. I have one in my stash.
Ah yes, scale. I want to build a 1/48th kit. If I can’t dig up one of the classic airframes kits I will most likely just backdate Has. kit as far as I can with the metal wings. Thanks for the suggestions, and keep 'em coming!
Is there any difference other than decals between the Classic Airframes’ Battle of Britain kit and their normal MK I?
What about the new Airfix 1/48 Hurricane? Does that one come with the two-blade prop and fabric wings? I have not seen one, but thought I would mention it.
The only rag wing Hurricanes OOB are the Classic Airframes kit in 48th-- it is buildable, the only CA kit that I have multiples of. The Sweet one in 144th and there is a limited run one in 72nd from an Eastern European mfg but I cannot remember - may have been Sword. As for the Mainstream kits they are ALL metal winged versions - Post Battle of France. By the Battle of Britain most of the fabric winged Hurricanes had been rewinged with metal wings and the props upgraded to the three blade DeHaveland one (pointy spinner) or Jablo one with the big blunt spinner. The two bladed Watts propeller is really good only for pre-war or maybe up to early 1940 (pre-Blitzkreig) as the addition of teh three bladed props was seen to bring a marked increase in climbing performance
One thing to remember about the Classic kits. Most of the problems the kits have arises from the resin engines, cockpits or especially wheel wells not fitting without motor tool useage (or dynamite) The Hurri is differant. The wing is large (deep enough) that the wells fit easily, the cockpit is wide and large enough that the resin there fits and there is no engine to glue cylenders to and shoehorn into a cowling. The kit builds like a Hasegawa one, and even fits better where the after wing/fuselage joint is. So don’t be afraid of the CA Hurricane…the rest of them, well…
Airfix recently released a Mk1 Spitfire with the two bladed prop, the flat canopy & the unarmoured windscreen in 1/48th. Am working on one at the moment & it is quite nice. Not up to Tamiya/ Hasegawa standards but a whole lot better that their last new aircraft release that I tried, the TSR 2.
Someone used to do a set of fabric wings in resin & a two bladed prop to allow you to backdate the Airfix 1/48th Hurricane. I can’t remember who it was though.
Although not used in the BoB, Hurricanes of this type were used in France in 1940 by the BEF. You should be able to find some interesting schemes from that period. Belgium also hade several Hurricanes of this type.
I haven’t had much luck finding the classic aiframes kit. Thanks for the the links to the fabric wing conversion, has anyone used this? How is it? I’m only a couple models after getting back into it after five or six years of absence so I don’t really want too much surgery, yet [swg]. Thanks for the suggestions!
I just bought the ragwing MK I kit from Classic Airframes on eBay [oX)] so I’m in business! Anyway, are there any issues that I should be aware of and are there any recomended aftermarket parts for it that you guys can think of, ie exhausts etc?
I have not built my Classic Airframes Hurricane but I have built some of there other kits. The most important thing is test fit everything first! There should be no need for anything aftermarket on this kit unless you desire some different markings. That is the beauty of the Classic Airframes and the Eduard Profipack kits. They truely are complete kits right out of the box with no extras needed. They just take some extra time building mainly due to lack of locating pins and having to remove the resin pour stubs. Most of the parts need a little tweaking to get them just right but in the end the are worth the effort. Good luck and post some pics when you start on it.
