Dupli Color car paint

Hello! My son and I are working on P-51 in 1/48 scale. He wants to use Dupli Color Premium Automotive Paint, universal chrome for a metal finish. Will this spray paint harm the plastic? Thanks!

Yes, it’s good that you asked this question. I’ve tried to use Dupli Color without primer. It was disasterous. it ate and melted the plastic in some areas. IDK if the lack of primer was the culprit or not but Dupli color was designed for use on metal only.

Hello!

I used DupliColor paints on styrene models with no problems - in fact when I need to use spray cans, DupliColor is my brand of choice. Where it can go wrong is when you try to overspray some other kind of paint - oil or acrylic - that’s when a chemistry conflict can ruin your finish. You also need to check, if or when the chrome is dry enough to mask over it - many silver paints can not be masked over, because lifting the masking tape ruins the finish.

Good luck with your build and have a nice day

I’ve used Dupli-Color on lots of models but only over their primer. If you put the primer on in very light coats, letting it cure between coats, you should not have a problem using the colors over it. To be on the safe side, I put the colors on in light coats too, letting them cure overnight. I’ve heard that putting the colors on heavy, even over their primer, can eat through the primer and plastic and make quite a mess. I build kits that mostly require flat paints so Acrylics are my main go-to’s, but I do use enamels when needed.
