dull overcoat with Tamiya acrylics?

Can anyone tell me of the best dull overcoat to use on a model painted with Tamiya acrylics? I’ve read that you shouldn’t use lacquer-based overcoats like Testor’s Dullcote because it will attack acrylic paint. What would work best? TIA…

I don’t know which is best, but I can tell you that I have used Testor’s Dullcote for years over Tamiya Acrylics without any problems at all. But I am going to change and use Tamiya Matt Finish (30%) mixed with Future (70%) on my next project, I’ve heard it works very well.

Tamiya Acrylic Clear Coat mixed with Tamiya Acrylic Flat Base. Experiment on the ratio to get the desired flatness. But try clear 80% flatbase 20% for a start. Thin using acrylic thinner or isoprophyl alcohol.

I have used Gunze’s Topcoats with great successes so far as well as the Tamiya Topcoat.

Thanks guys!

MMF, is that the exact product name “Topcoat”? I searched Squadron and they don’t seem to carry anything matching that specific name by any manufacturer.

BTW whatever I use will be applied with an airbrush if that makes any difference.

Gunze makes 2 ranges:

Mr Topcoat & Mr Super Clear

Both come in cans, not sure what availability will be overseas though.

Thanks again MMF!

I’ve had good luck using Model Master’s “Flat Clear Acryl”, # 4636 over Tamiya acrylics. I always shot a coat of Future 1st to seal the base coat and the decals.

Thanks everyone for the tips!

I’ve been using Future with Tamiya flat base and it works fine. I just tried Testors Dullcote thinned with lacquer thinner and the result was even better.
