Dreaded Academy Whirblewind

Howdy all!! While I’m waiting for my P.E. set for the Pz II GB I finished off the much maligned Academy Whirblewind I did alot of scratch work and enjoyed the build alot!!

you turned her into a beauty andy, nicely done!

Wow. Really cool.

very nice job on what i hear is a pain in the ###### kit to build. you did it justice!

Thanks guys. I figured that I only paid about $ 12 for this kit so I experimented with some stuff. Styrene details and homemade mcgyvered PE. I don’t know if I’ll use the heat thing for Zim or not.

looks great stug, ive been passing up this kit a lot lately seeing this one i might just snatch the next one up and give it a shot, nice job

Hi Stug.
If you dont mind, can you give us a run though of the major problems with the kit. I also heard that the kit is a real dog. I want to tackle this kit so just want to know what to expect.
Thanks.

Well MartinJK, it’s basically a knock off of the old Tamiya kit. While there’s really no major build problems, it’s just not up to par compared to the more recent kits.

The turrent pieces have some fit probs. I used the weld seems to take care of the pieces not wanting to line up. The two hull pieces need some shaving to match up and I put styrene in to fill up the sponsons.

The exhaust is way off and I used a Dragon muffler from the spares box. Most of the tools in the kit are overly thick and I replaced them also with the spares box.The gun assembly is sparse and I added bolts and rivets as well as the armor plates around the gun housing. I put JR barrels on because the ones in my kit were warped. Like I said there’s really no major headaches and this kit and the Academy Pz IV are just begging for a PE set to bring them up to par!!

Here’s some pics. of the build up.

STUG61 ,It looks like you went ahead and used the heat thing on the zim after all or am i mistaken or something else? Do you know if the old Tamiya kit (35085)has the same fit problems?I’ve got a couple of them is why im asking.Your build and camo paint look great.

[:D] great looking build, keep up the good work.[:D]

Great build. I like the paint and weathering.

Thanks guys!! I meant to say I wouldn’t use the heat thing AGAIN!! My bad typing.[D)] I’m not sure if the Tamiya kit has those glitches. It’s really not that bad, just not a newer quality kit. I’d buy it again for the price I got on this one.

I said that I wouldn’t use the heat Zim AGAIN unless I do alot of practicing on scrap. But like I said, for what I paid for it I didn’t feel bad experimenting.

Super job!

Thanks Brian!!!

Thanks for taking the time to write the mini-review Stug. I have heard a lot of bad comments on this kit but never specific inquests. The price of the model reflects the quality and as you said, lots was replaced with your build. Thanks again for sharing your experience.

Edit: By the way, awesome job on your Whirbelwind.
[:)]

Thanks MartinJK, as stated before it was fun to play with. One of these days I’ll put this and my other builds into some mini-dios ( viginnetes) If I can ever get the hang of painting faces on figures!!![D)]

Wow, definitely ended up a beauty. Very nicely done.

Great work STUG61, it really looks great, the zim effects really set it off.

Thanks for sharing.

Great job!

[:)]Very nice[tup][tup]. I built the tamiya kit, it was no problem except for the tracks which were brittle; I replaced them with “indy” tracks…Kenny
