Some model I have work in the past few days. After some research from books and forums including Fine Scale… I go with 212 for MWittmann Tiger 1 Villers-Bocage. Comments welcome. Greetings to all. TDC
I’m actually more interested in the British tank seen in the 1st pic. Having said that, the zimm on the Tiger is really good - done the auld fashioned way with a soldering iron tip.
Yes… I practice a lot before using that soldering iron. Nice Tiger 1 008, fantastic. I have to check that dry-brushing that MadMel recommend. At this moment I don’t have Mig pigments. Pastel do the trick???
Nice job on both there, Thomas! It’s rare nowadays to see the hot knife method used; I’m scared to death to even attempt it with the price of kits these days! Nicely done!
Actually, Wittman’s Tiger around the time was #205–on the morn of June 13th he jumped into the first tank in front of his line of Tigers hidden in a sunken road, but after hearing engine trouble in that one, immediately jumped into the next one, #222 of Unterscharfuhrer Sowa, and it was this one which decimated the British column…#212 was the panzer of Uscha. Balthasar “Bobby” Woll, Wittman’s former gunner, who by that time had gained command of his own panzer.
The reason is that I got this Dragon kit No. 6253 a few months ago showing Tiger 1 212 as the tank MWittmann use in the charge to Villers-Bocage. I read before that the Tiger was 222. I have the book “Tiger 1 in the Western Front” Jean Restayn. But I discovered some critical errors in the description of some photos in that book. I have too, “Villers-Bocage through the Lens” D Taylor. So I visit some web pages and forums and found some heavy disscusion about this battle and the machine he use. Some said, the day of June 13, Sowa was in 212 because 222 has some problem too. Later, 222 was towing 231 out of the town. So, probarly Dragon make this kit base on new info. At the last minute I decide for 212 too. With this Dragon, I have 11 Tiger 1 in my collection.
And just today arrive another Tiger 1 (12), this time 007 from AFV kit 35S27 MWittmann special
Wow Thomas, that’s some compelling information! I’d love to read about it–got a website to recommend?
I have to say that, as a Wittman admirer, I never did a model of 222; it wasn’t “his” tank, and there is–as far as I’m aware-no definitive photo evidence of it where you can actually make out the number…hmmmmm [%-)] There’s one taken on June 13 alleging his tank on the Rue Pasteur but you can’t make out any number at all–unusual because of the rather prominent numbering of other tanks in his Kompanie…
I got my info from the book “Michael Wittman & the Tiger commandes of the Liebstandarte”
OK, we’ve discussed the Tiger enough [:)]; tell me about the Trumpeter Striker! How did the assembly go? Do you think it’s better or worse detail- and build-wise than the other offerings of the kit? I really like the Striker, just unsure which kit to purchase. Any help is appreciated.
Definitely go with the AFV Club Stryker kit if you are keen to get one. I wrote a review on this kit recently if you are keen. The detailing of the weapons station and the tyres are far more accurate.
