I just started this kit, the detail is great, kits within the kit. I did some research in this site for anyone who made this kit or reviewed this kit, but my search was in vane. So, here’s the question, are there “TWO KITS” in this box? I does look like it from some of the “extra” pieces I see here. Many thanks for taking your time out for me.
I think the one you’ve got is the new “Premium” kit? If so, it will have parts from the older original kit still in the box but will be marked as “not for use” on the instructions. There aren’t enough parts to do 2 kits but you’ll have a lot of spares.
Yes, the box is marked “premium edition.” Many thanks for your help. Its hard to understand some of the assembly directions w/o a little “trial” fit. The the kit itself is really a detailed gem, as I said before, kits within the kit. If you’ve made this kit, did you notice any “pitfalls” I should be aware of?
The 250/9 may or may not have some of the same pitfalls, it’s hard to say for sure. The biggest things I encountered were the missing transmission and the fact that the supplied clear-part visors were from the 251 series of kits and didn’t fit the openings of the 250. The transmission won’t be an issue since the /9 has an enclosed roof but the visors are something to watch out for if they didn’t fix it in this kit.
Thanks for the “heads-up” on the problem areas. I went to your web site, great model. Excellent cameo painting & weathering. I do have to complete reading all of your article, I just skimmed over it for the moment. How difficult was it to assemble the “tracks?” Your article with the attached pictures will be an exceptional guide for me during my build. Many thanks again, cheers…have a great week…
The tracks assemble easily IMHO if you take the approach that they are meant to be workable if you’re careful when you glue the cap block into place. All you need to do is slide the pins from one link down into the next link, then attach the cap block and the pins are trapped and workable. I found the easiest way to do that was to build the links as pairs and once the cap blocks had set, start joining the pairs together as a ‘daiy-chain’ type of arrangement.
Had I known about these tracks, I’d of passed on this kit. I’m 71 & been building since I was 10, but my eyes are starting to go, I’m a bit hampered with macular degeneration. So, please let me understand once more as I read this info & your article on the track assembly. The “cap block” snaps as a “keeper” to hold the links in place; no glue at all? I can see what you are explaining, but no glue leaves me questioning this assembly. Thanks again for your help, as always, it is very much appreciated.
Definitely need glue on the cap block, just have to be careful with how much you apply so that it doesn’t get down into the pins and cause them to set and not remain workable. There’s a contact surface where the block matches up with the link in the middle, that’s where you need to glue. HTH! [;)]
Just a little hint when gluing those tracks, do not use liquid cement. Use some Testors tube glue and a tooth pick. The liquid stuff will run down into the pins and your track will become one solid piece.
Great idea, I’m off to my local hobby store, its been a while since I used that stuff. I can see how that will work, many thanks. Of course, by the time I’m done with these tracks, I’ll be ready for the “funny farm!”
Many thanks for your help & “build log” which I now use as my “masterplan of action.” Without your help, I’d have been in one heck of a fix. As you so aptly pointed out, there certainly is a problem with the assembly drawings & matching up parts#s & sprews. Again, many thanks for your insight, had it not been for your help, I’d have probably “pitched” this kit. Have a great weekend…WC
Bill the Sd.kfz. 250/9 premium kit does include the transmission it’s sprue isn’t on the parts list but it is sprue Y parts Y1 and Y2. Just got the kit in today and thought I’d let everyone know.
But with so much spare parts you could probably put other accessories inside to make it look “Lived in”.
Good to know Mikey…they had the parts from the 250/10 kit in the series but left them out for some reason when they did the 250/1 Neu Premium. Glad to hear they corrected that in the /9. I’m assuming they did the same with the /8!
They even include the parts from the Sd.kfz. 251/17 Ausf.D mainly the guns and the interior components. Though why they don’t let you use the 20 round KwK 38 ammo racks is beyond me since they would make sense in a Sd.Kfz. 250/9. Would it be plausible that at some point the ammo racks would have been installed to increase the ammo capacity of the 250/9?
Probably would depend on the space in the interior and the overall weight in the vehicle. Have to remember that the 250 was rated as a lighter vehicle in terms of engine/suspension than the 251. Still, it would have to carry some ammo in some fashion…just perhaps not in the same type of rack as the 251/17.
It gives you something that looks like ammo racks for what looks like the size of the Flak 38 magazine cans which were 20 round magazines and the Kwk 38 magazines were 10 rounds and the cans would have been shorter. 1 rack holds 2 cans and the other looks like it holds 3 so that would have been 10 magazines at 100 rounds total and there is no ammo stowage for the coaxial MG which I think is strange.
I did find the transmission & it assembles great, no problems with the cover fit either. However the drive shaft appears a little long. I cut back the rear floor board & it fit real good. Thanks for your help & info. The instruction sheets leave a lot to be desired, that coupled with the quantity of “extra…don’t use” parts have me searching sprews like crazy…UGH. Beautiful kit, but definately not for the beginner.
