Dragon Jagdpanther early to late conversion

I just got the old Dragon Jagdpanther Early version that they re-released in the imperial series. It seems that the kit comes with a lot of extra parts and they look like the Late version parts. I am wondering, n the question is for anyone who has owned the kit or knows the difference between the early and late differences (cuz I sure don’t have a clue on them without any prior reading), if there is anyway I can just use only the extra parts to build a late version Jagdpanther without having to resort to kit bashing. I have a Panther G steel wheel version and the newer Kursk Panther D that I might be able to get parts from the extras left on the sprue. Any suggestions, even with aftermarket parts, are welcomed.

Hi Ryan, and welcome to the forums! I have built the original kit put out by Dragon which only had one or two extra parts with it. I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that the newer release of the early version, even with the extra parts added, are not sufficent to build a late model Jagdpanzer L/70. Without doing some additional research that is about the best I can tell you. Semper Fi, Mike

Uh Mike, he was talking aboiut a Jagdpanther. [;)]

I can’t really answer your question, other than I know the Late has a 2 piece barrel and at times a raised engine fan, and anti-flame mufflers.

I took a look at the Jagdpanther and Panther G’s extra parts and salvaged these bits and pieces.

it’s a 2MB picture so it might take a bit time. I think the one thing that’s pretty much missing is the updated exhaust. I was reading through Achtang panzer site on the modifications done to the late version.

Does anyone have the old dragon kit manual for the late version Jagdpanther, or maybe even a tamiya manual??

From MMiR’s “The Modeler’s Guide to the Jagdpanzer”

Early JagdPanthers has zimmerit, Late JagdPanthers do not.

Some Early JagdPanthers had two driver’s periscopes visible although one was covered with a plate until Oct 44, after that only a single periscope. Late JagdPanthers have only a single driver periscope.

Early JagdPanthers had twin exhaust pipes mounted vertically on rear of hull
Late JagdPanthers had Flammernichter (flame arrestors) instead of exhaust pipes and a crew heater over left circular engine vent.

Early JagdPanthers had pioneer tools and cleaning rods mounted on sides.
Late JagdPanthers had tools mounted on rear of hull.

ack, looks like I can’t really do this unless I want to sacrifice a Late Panther G for it. Dragon didn’t leave extra parts in the boxes for the exhaust and the add-on raised fan.
=( . Both had undergone similar mods. See the problem is that I have 2 Early Version Jagdpanthers from DML, an older imperial series one and the updated one with aluminum barrel and stuff. Seems like the only rational choice is to make a diorama with both in it, and look for another Late Jagdpanther then. =P Thanks for the help guys.

One thing about the late Jagdpanthers (like the one at the APG museum) is that they generally had a bolted on gun insert while the one in the Dragon kit (which builds up nicely, by the way) has the early style welded gun insert as well as the one piece barrel that was mentioned in an earlier posting. One thing that I changed in my build up (based on photos that I’d seen of the engine deck) was to substitute the early style “swirled” fan covers that I salvaged from an Italarei Panther D kit for the Panther A type covers that come with the kit. I don’t know how common these “swirled” D-type fan covers were on early Jagdpanthers, but they look good. My advice would be to build up the early Jagdpanther as an early one and get the Tamiya Jagdpanther that came out a few years ago to build up as a late type (it is a really good kit) Be sure to post your results when you get your Jagdpanthers done. Ryan I stand corrected on my comments regarding your Jagdpanther! Thanks Eric for looking out for the “old man”. Must have been that fresh super glue I was using earlier, it kind of clouds the brain housing group. LOL. Semper Fi, Mike

Haha, mike, no problem. It sure would have been nice to build a jagdpanZER IV out of that kit so I can scratch it off of my kits to get later list. I’ve finally getting close on BUYING the full collection of things thats got 88mm gun on it list, aka, “88mms of Terror”. I have come to accept that I will be getting the late version tamiya jagdpanther and panther G instead.

Zouave146, did you put the ausf. D panther’s fan on the Early jagdpanther or the late one? I have an kurst panther ausf. D, maybe i can just make a silicon cast of it and make some resin parts myself. I just really hope that these are the only differences. Look at those parts i put in the picture I posted, the bolted-on gun mount was actually in their panther G kit, same for the two piece gun. with those, the crew heater extra raised fan from the panther G and the exhaust, I can pretty much make it into a Late version jagdpanther???

I put the D-type covers on the early Jagdpanther. CW
