I went to my local Hobby store, along with Hobby Lobby, looking for Flat Black. I was wanting to specifically buy Tamiya’s XF-1 Flat Black, but after some searching, just any flat black will do.
Surprisingly, there were no Flat Blacks that I have found (XF-1 ran out). Fortunately and unfortunately, I have flat black, except it is one of those cheap arts and crafts acrylic paints.
You can always use whatever black you have, and then spray it with a clear flat coat. Works fine.
Badger Stynylrez primer is a great flat black and it’s adherence seems to me tough as hell.

I agree with Bill on the Stynylrez as I mentioned in the duplicate thread with the same title. But my point here isn’t that, I just wanted to add about Stynylrez that periodically it needs a good mixing by hand or better yet, power mixer, not just shaking up. It can settle over time and you can’t see that through the bottle. But the stuff works great. I use it quite a bit as my flat black but it’s not all I use.
The DecoArt will work too, see the other thread.
I also recently did what Chuck suggested, sprayed clear flat over semigloss black for the Model A chassis I’m working on. I’m just about ready to mount the engine in that chassis, a milestone event if I get it done maybe later today lol ( long time coming, this kit isn’t the easiest fitting thing in the world but loving it anyway) !!
Hi;
Go to your local Wal-Mart and get a Rattle can of Rusteoleum Satin or Flat Black. It should work just fine.
Who can beat the simplicity of that lol ! But its just truth.
On another note I’ve been decanting their X2 paints and their older regulat Painters Touch series paints lately, adding a touch more thinner and airbrushing them with awesome results. I’m gonna do the 57 1/16 scale T-Bird in that stuff when I get to that kit.
They work just fine, too. I use craft store acrylics, alongside acrylics made by scale modeling brands, and enamels, lacquers, and oils.
Thinned properly, those craft store paints can be brushed by hand or shot through an airbrush.
Another option… buy Tamiya Gloss Black or Semi Gloss Black, and some Tamiya Flat Base. You add the Flat Base to either one and create your own Tamiya Flat Black.
