Dogfight Doubles.....ahhh the memories

Theres a topic over in the armour section that got me thinking about these old kits from Airfix the Dogfight Doubles. I bought a few of these as kids and I was wondering who else remembers them. Only trouble is I did a little research and just found out they re released some of them 2 years ago doh!! I really must look at the airfix section more closely in future.
My Favourite was the 109 and the Mosquito.

Wasn’t it the Me 262 and the Mosquito? I think it was the Beaufighter together with the 109.
But anyway, they were really nice! I remember the box art of the kit with the MiG-15 and the Mirage III, with the flaming MiG in the background …

Also remember the Double Dog Fight kits released by Monogram several years back.

Regards, Rick

Yup, remember those kits.
Even had a motorised dog fight display for one of them.

your right it was the 262. I had a mental picture of the 262 but my hands had a life of their own and typed 109.It was a very cool idea tho. I`ll always remember the old airfix kits as they got me started moelling all those years ago , I suspect a lot of their current sales are due to nostalgia buying. Ijust wish theyd rerelease the old multipose infantry they did cos they really rocked.

tamiya does kits in pairs… some of them aren’t enemies, but friends though. problem is, the come in 1/100 scale.

Yeap! Tamiya had the Me-262 and Me-163 in 1/100 scale, there was also the 1/100 F-86 vs MiG-15.

As for the Airfix, there were also the Spitfire IX vs Me-110, Stormovik vs Fw-190 and a MiG 21 vs a USAF propeller observing plane (?) in Vietname War.

Nice memories. I still have my Beaufighter/109 and Mosquito/Me262.

if i am not mistaken revell also have a couple of dogfight doubles issued.

DML has their “LOCK ON” series. i saw a SU27 and a F-15 combo in the LHS the other day. but those are 1/144 scale, and they are rather fun.

and what about the kits Lindhberg released years ago P-47 vs HE-111 and the F6F vs G4M1 Betty.

I’ve got the Monogram P-47 Razorback / Do-335 and F-86 / Mig-15 kits. Also got an
old Revell “Carrier Air Group” kit in 1/72nd that contains an F-4, an A-7, and an A-3B
Had 'em in my stash for about 20 years or so.
Ray

I remember one from Monogram(?) that had a Hurricane and Bf-109.Allen

wasnt that the Yankee Station kit from Monogram Ray. and I have the old 4 kit F-4E Thunderbirds flight set from revell in my stash.

I remember those kits… I actually built the bf-110/Spitfire kit last year. And actually, this is a nice transition to a question that I have wanted to ask. Are all Airfix models that crappy? I’ve never had such fit problems with a kit before. Granted, 2 models for $10 means you can’t expect too much. But my experience with these models was so bad that it has scared me away from trying any of their other kits.

I ended up with a decent bf-110, but the spitfire…well, forget about it. I ended up using it to practice painting techniques.

Can anyone tell me if Airfix offers a decent product (1/72 WWII era)?

-Thanks

I bought a pair of 1/72 Airfix Widgeons off ebay awhile back to do for my dad as they were in USCG markings and he is in the CG… well after 1/2 a tube of squadron green I decided to can the idea of building them… I was actually having to recreate parts of the body the plastic didn’t flow into the mold in…

Some of the Airfix kits are 30 even 40 years old so there are some detail issues lol I guess a lot of people look back on Airfix in a Nostalgic way cos thats what they started on. I havent built an Airfix kit in over 20 years So I have no idea how things have improved or changed. Maybe I should try one , but I dont want to ruin my memories of happy glueing at the kitchen table[:D]

BigTon,

I’ve given my opinion of Airfix - before - so please pardon if this is redundant…

In the last three years or so I’ve bought and built their Westland Sea King, P-38L, P40 Kitty hawk (see the recent post “Here Kitty Kitty”) & Spit Vb. I’ve had a blast building these. I also have a Bristol Bulldog and a Spit I in the “to-build” pile. I can’t help you much with accuracy questions. I don’t really pay much attention to whether the kit is accurate. If it looks like a “P-whatever”, then it’s close enuf for me.

Some of the kits had fit problems of varying degrees. The P-38 had a problem with warpage on one of the tail booms - but I have heard that this isn’t unique to the Airfix kit - it’s a long thin piece ! Rivet detail on some of the kits is overstated. A little light sanding usually does the trick for me. The hardest time I’ve had is with the clear parts on the P-40 and the Sea King. It was difficult, but possible to correct the Sea King. The P-40 … Well… I’ll just have to live with it the way it is. I was very impressed by the surface finish on the Bulldog. very nice detail - not overdone. The quality of this kit seems to be a few steps above the others, but I haven’t started building it yet.

My opinion is that they provide much needed fill for the big hole in the kit manufacturing industry. It would be interesting to hear from some industry marketing guru whether the number of youngsters modelling is related to the price of the kits. Is modelling more popular in England or in other locations where Airfix and other less expensive kits are more readily available ?

I know that my kids wouldn’t want to plunk down 20 bucks to buy a 1/72 scale plane & a bottle of paint - and then have to ask Dad to borrow another 2 bucks for glue. (Well… they probably wouldn’t have much of a problem with that last part.)

Long live AIRFIX and those like them !

Chris

Hey… Thanks for the heads-up on Airfix!

I’m still a little reluctant, but I’ve had my eyes on a Mossie of theirs for a while now…Perhaps it is time to take the plunge again!

I will say that I’ve had a lot of luck with Academy’s 1/72 line. Plenty of nice detail, good fit, and multiple decal options. Not to shabby for $10.

Once again- Thanks for the help
