Does anyone out there know how to convert Mr.Color paints to Tamiya or Testors Acryl that are readily available here in the U.S.?

Hello Everyone,

I’m not new to modeling, but I guess I am. I used to put model kits together when I was a kid. They didn’t turnout very well. Now that I am older and have a lot more patience I’ve been getting back into the hobby.

I just bought an AFV Club M1130 Stryker model kit and the instructions paint chart gives you Hobby Color, Mr. Color, Humbrol, Revell and Life Color on the paint list. None of which I have seen ever in any hobby store where I live. I have been googling and gave up trying to find a coversion chart that tells you what Tamiya or Testors paints are comparable. The last model I put together was a Revell, and their website had a conversion chart from Revell paint to Model Master (Testors) which was great.

I’m not having any luck with this one. This is my first AFV Club model, I supposed it was good because Fine Scale Modeler did a feature on a AFV Club M1126 Stryker in last months issue.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Trying to become a better modeler.

Thanks

Google paint converter chart using the brand (ie: Humbrol paint converter chart).

Poke around here:

You’re probably not going to find the info you’re looking for. Generally, to get correct colors using Tamiya acrylics you have to mix them. So there is not really a chart that shows Mr Color/Tamiya equivalents.

For example, Mr Color C308 is Light Ghost Grey. There is no Light Ghost Grey in the Tamiya acrylic range. You have to mix your own brew up. Tamiya does have some common colors in their spray cans but I realize that’s not what your asking.

If you have an iPhone there is a free app called iModel Kit which has a very handy paint cross feature that allows you to cross via brand and color. Even allows you to mix paints and show you the result.

Flyin High is right. Good luck matching for Tamiya… Another point- I realize some folks don’t like ordering online, but I would never limit myself to only whats in the local Hobby shop. What I’m saying is, going online and ordering Lifecolor or Mr. Color would be an excellent choice.

thanks for that iphone app tip-just what I needed

If there is a certain color in acrylic I’m looking for, I usually see if my LHS could order it for me. My LHS carries Tamiya acrylics, Humbrol (not a huge variety) Floquil and Model Master Enamels. I have asked him to order me whatever color I need in MM Acrylics with no problems. Better than ordering online and not having to deal with the S&H costs.

On occasion, he does get some oddball paint brand in the clearance bin.

FS 34097. Tamiya Black Green is close. Humbrol 105. Testors Field Green is supposed to be close but looks Olive to me.

But plan to weather it too, it’ll look better.

give paintfinder.ehaltom.com/load_colors.php a try!

Thank you!!! This has been the most useful post I have seen since I started researching the paints a few months ago.
