do micro Sol & Set affect a future undercoat?

i just futured my overmentioned 1/144 F-14, and i just put on one decal, and it seems that the micro set has done something to the future. its mild but i want to make sure that there wont be any serious reaction. will there?

thanks [:)]

I’ve never had a reaction from Micro Set, but Micro Sol can affect the Future. Any solution that is alcohol based can cause the same reaction. When applying Micro Sol, apply it carefully so that it covers the decal, but don’t slop it all over the painted surface. The good news is, after everything has cured, another coat of Future will cause 99% of the discoloration to magically disappear.

You probably have a white haze forming, not to worry. Wait for the decals to dry completely then recoat with Future.

will this affect the effect the future is supposed to have ? if micro sol dissolves the future, when i slide the decal on, it isnt going to be on top of a glossy coat of future, its going to be on top of a mess of micro sol and future. or am i worrying too much?

is Mr Mark set by gunze alcohol based ? will that affect the future ?

will i be able to resist the overwhelming urge to make more lame puns about future? [;)]

i am putting decals on my Priller 109 right now, and i’d say DO NOT WORRY![:)]

i sometimes have that effect with M Sol and M Set, but i just let it dry, then add a little more Set/Sol to said area, wait for it to dry and “Hey Presto” the whitening has disappeared.

just have a little faith and persevere.[;)]

by the time you come round to putting a covering coat of future on (always good to protect your decals), everything is cool![8D]

Hope this helps.

Reggie,

I wish I could help, but I NEVER use Future! Tried it, didn’t like it,don’t need it. (I think it may have something to do with the smell,Ha!).

Seriously, a lot of builders use future with success, and I wish them all the best. I personally think that there are too many issues associated with it’s use, and, I think it’s overuse on kits has sort of “marked” model finishes and canopies that are coated with it. By this, I mean that I can spot a Future coated model a mile away, ditto with a canopy that’s been dipped, so for me, it kind of detracts from the work. Just my opinion. There are other ways to keep decals from silvering on flat finishes and I prefer to polish my canopies with plastic polish.

Good luck with the future thing!

Steve

Micro-Sol and Micro-Set DO NOT dissolve the Future. Sometimes excessive amounts of a setting solution in combination with Future that may not have cured 100% and Oxygen create a reaction resulting in a white foggy around the perimeter. This is just a microscopic roughening of the acrylic coat that is the Future and a second application fills those microscopic fractures eliminating the fog. This is exactly the same thing you achieve with a clear part - filling the microscopic imperfections that reduce clarity. There really is nothing to worry about. There is not enough Oxygen under the decal for the reaction to happen there so decal adhesion is not affected.

Worry is a good thing. It gives you grey hair & dignity in the Future [:)]. But don’t worry too much here though. The Future hasn’t been dissolved, only discolored. It will still do it’s job & the haze will go away after another topcoat of Future. I’m not familiar with the Mr. Mark softener, but any alcohol based solution can cause the reaction.

thanks all, my fears are taken care of. as for my lame puns …

interesting topic Reg… I was wondering the same thing 20 minutes ago as I micro-sol’d over future… so far no problems…

Then your just not doing it right Tom!!!

In Future[:P] I want to see a white fog on your models ok?

haha Tweets… I’ll try… I had the idea that if a little bit worked, a lot must work better but knew I wouldnt be able to get to the hobby shop tomorrow so resisted using the whole bottle.

actually if it worked it would be a good, but expensive way of weathering my SBD I was decalling… I am going for a slightly faded look anyway! Just pour the whole bottle over it!

i had the discoloration thing happen as well. I stopped using the micro sol cause it didnt seem to assist with the decals snuggling down at all really.

Actualy, I wonder if there is a way that this could be used for weathering???

Maybe a cruddy winter camo scheme applied on a Hs 129?

i tried the future-as-micro-set method of applying one national insignia on my F-14 just now and hooboy it was dicey ! i didnt know hwo to deal with it. thankfully i didnt ruin anything. i think i will stick to micro set.
