I took modelling back up about 18 months ago and I hate to think how much money I’ve spent since then on paints, brushes, airbrushes, a compressor, pastels, glues, all sorts of tools, reference books, bench light, magnifier, diorama terrain materials etc, etc, etc. My father retired last year and mentioned recently that he was looking for a small project to do in his shed. Aha! I was thinking I need a custom made modelling bench (I don’t) so I sketched one up and gave him money to go and buy all the stuff which he’s now happily putting together.
I’m strictly a one model at a time guy. Must be some sort of obsessive compulsive thing where I can’t start one model until I’ve completely finished the previous one. So you’d think I could get by with a small reserve of one or two items in the drawer right? Nah, I can’t go anywhere near a hobby shop without coming out with something I don’t really need. I’ve got boxes stuffed in drawers in my workshop hoping the wife won’t find them. A Cromwell, THREE Panzer IV’s (why do i need 3?), a T-26 (I dislike T-26’s but it was going cheap so I simply had to have it), a Panther, a Panzer II, half a dozen boxes of various figures, a Pak40, and a Stug. And I just know the next time I’m out I’m gonna come home with a Wespe. All these in 1/35 so not cheap.
Now I’m guessing I’m not the only one with this problem, so come on lads, reassure me. I don’t need therapy do I?
First off [#welcome]. Second I can assure you that you are not alone and most share the same addiction. Before I joined FSM, I had maybe 2-3 kits. Now, I’m up to 32. No end in sight. Ebay has killed me, but a the same time, saved me a boatload of money. So pull up a chair and share in the insanity called “The Dark Side”. [}:)]
need a reference to a good therapist.hahahahahaha, dont worry it only takes a min. for the meds to kick-in.you may need therapy if you start hiding kits in places so you can sneek off to work on them.but honestly i dont think building models in any way might lead to therapy.for it is therapy.build on grasshopper.welcome.to the dark side.
Tiger, only 32 kits, that is nothing. I have lost track on the count of kits. I think I have at least 32 figure kits alone. If you include resin update, accessory, and figure sets, the number multiplies exponentially.[:O]
HA! LOL![(-D][#ditto] I must have, oh…over 120 1/35, an old 1/16 Tiger I, and probably 60-70 1/72 kits–figure kits? in the 30-40 box range, with maybe 20 resin figures…I’ve got 'em stuffed in plastic boxes, under the bed, on closet shelves, in the kitchen cabinets (ah, the joy of bachelorhood!)…I have to keep building just to have room to buy more![(-D]
My stash certainly is no where near some of the numbers you guys are putting. I have a whole 10 kits in my stash and about 10 figure and AM parts so it takes a small corner of my desk at the moment.
By modelling standards around here, thats probably one of the poorest stash ever!
You know you are fully in the grip when you have to create a spreadsheet inventory system to keep track of not only the kits (to avoid sale mania and needless duplication) but also their designated AM parts and bits for when their time at the bench comes up. [;)]
My stash currently stands at 102 kits. I don’t buy new kits until the number drops below 100, helps keep the motivation to build alive and well. [:D]
I don’t know how many kits i have but i do know i probably wont be able to build them all before i die … but that wont keep me from buying more.
As far as having more kits of the same vehicle, well for the past 5 years it has been all about Tiger tanks for me and i don’t know how many unbuild Tiger kits i have but probably about 10 .
My reasoning is…you never know when a kit might become UNAVAILABLE! So you have to buy the one you want when you see it. I won’t count my stash …Lets just say three cabinets are now full…and No, the wife has no idea!
Nope. You know you’re in the grip when you create the spreadsheet and then still buy duplicates of what you already have because, well, umm, umm, well, umm, oh hell, you just wanted it![:D]
We’re all crazy. That’s why we like our hobby and do what we do.
If we didn’t we wouldn’t be stockpiling, gett colors for sometime down the road etc., It’s a madnees we have. I and I wouldn’t have it any other way.[:D]
Don’t worry I have all kinds of problems like that… I am trying to finish A M2A2 Bradley, and M1A1 Abrhams before the summer starts so I can make a model for my grandfather but then I decided that I would by 1 more kit for after that and they just kept pilling up. right now I have 10 box’s at my boarding school and it is not the funest thing.
I just got back into modeling about 3 monthes ago after about 13 years. I have a stash of about 15 AFVs and maybe a dozen figures sets and such. Worst part is that I havent finished a SINGLE one yet! Now in my defense I have been waiting 2 monthes for Modelkasten tracks for one kit. Then I have an old Tamiya Tiger that I keep redoing. I try a technique. strip it. redo it. Just a practice model really.
