Just wanted to pass on what I thought was a good buy from Ikea for displaying my ship models.I appologize in advance if these have been posted before. The first one is called “Klingsbo”, and cost $129! That’s the Tamiya 1/350 scale Missouri in the case, so you can get an idea of the size.
These are called “Detolf”, and cost $59 apiece.I use these to display tanks, and planes, etc., but I’m sure they could hold 1/700 scale ships too. I modified them by adding four additional shelves each.
Anyway, a couple of ideas for displaying your models.
Thanks for the interest. To answer your question, Ikea doesn’t sell spare pegs for the Detolf; it’s not set up that way. Inside the glass walls, the shelves are supported by a frame that resembles a ladder. It comes with 4 shelves, so what I did was welded 1/4" round bar in between what was already there. Then I cut plexiglass into the shapes of the shelves, and lastly, I painted the ladder framework overall silver to blend in my welds.
I’m enclosing a close up which shows the frame pretty well. Hope this helps answer your question.
I have a Detolf case as well…how do you keep the dust out of yours? Do you get dust in it? I don’t have access to a welder but do you think (as you seem to have experience) it would stand up to being soldered? The heaviest part would be the glass shelf I suppose. Many thanks for any info you can share…Hank
I’m not too sure how a soldered joint would hold up, but I would suggest cleaning the paint from where you plan to solder totally before proceeding. I would think it would do fine.
As for dust control, I put weather stripping inside the glass next to the openings around the door.(All four edges) It doesn’t totally eliminate the dust, but it lessens it quite a bit!
while looking over the cases in the stores themselves there are many tagged as “dust free” cabinets. seems like something maybe relatively only in the past couple of years or so. i have one of the cases similar to those posted above and alot of dust gets into them over time. if you take things out and dust/clean them often it may not be a problem, but if you leave your models in the cases for long periods of time without doing so, the dust can still be heavy and potentially a problem.
I recently got 4 of the Detolf cabinets and since we don’t have an Ikea I paid a premium for shipping. Even though the shipping doubled the price there is nothing out there even close to the price. I like the idea of adding extra shelves.
Oh Nathan, you’re wife says the alternative is that YOU can do more housework…[:-^]
Was also wondering about the dust… was thinking of getting another tall bookcase (forgot the exact name, Billy I think?), but get the “glass windows” option.
Sorry for the delay in responding, but I’ve been offline for a while.
I’m enclosing a few more pics to illustrate how I dust-proofed my cabinets, and also to show how many kits you can display in them.
Basically, I ran self adhesive weather-stripping around all 4 surfaces behind the glass door:
This shot is looking up at the inside of the cabinet:
As I said before, it doesn’t totally eliminate the dust, but it cuts down on it tremendously!
These next two shots show how many kits the shelves will hold. The actual dimensions of the shelf are 11" x 15", with a bit more room on all sides. These planes are al 1/48 scale:
And these tanks are all 1/35 scale:
I hope this answers some of your questions, and I’m glad I could pass this tip along. I am sold on Ikea for inexpensive (relatively) glass display cases. Thanks for the interest!
I’m not sure if they have anything to display a 1/200 scale ship individually. I don’t think they have a case that small. They do have a lot of different wall ounted cabinets with glass doors and shelves; maybe they could work for you.
YES< thats the one I posted about (Ikea bookcase). Works great and you can adjust the height of the shelves accordingly. You can even cram in an extra shelf if you dont have “tall” builds.
