I hope this hasn’t been hashed to bad lol… I am building a 1/48 Italeri A-10 that is going to be given to a JTAC unit in the Air Force, Its in flight tipped on one wing so it can be turned around to see the weapon load,(I’m waiting on Info from the unit as to which Squadron they worked with and what the load out they used), so its going to be tall not deep. Does anyone have any ideas on cases for this or how to build one?
You can fashion your own acrylic display case with clear sheet you can purchase at any home improvement store. Get the thickest available, usually around 1/4", and hand cut it into box sides that you can cement together. IPS WeldOn #4 works about the best for acrylic, this is available in pints from McMaster Carr. Make sure the glueing edges are true and flat, then cement them as you would any styrene model! The exposed edges can be sanded progressively to 1000 grit, then they polish up beautifully with a felt Dremel wheel and compound. I usually use a base of plywood edged with an attractive molding that the clear dust cover can nestle into, just fashion the base after the clear case is finished as it is easier to trim the wood to fit than to modify the acrylic box. Have fun!
One of my many former jobs was a Glasier. I make my cases from cut sheets of glass with a routed wood base. Glass is actually pretty easy to cut with only a little practice. I use clear silicone to glue it together. You tube is your friend and you can find many tutorials on how to do this the correct way with better explainations than I can elaborate on here.
