this will be my next big aircraft project i think, but first i need some help…[:D]
i have both the revell and also the monogram kits in 1/48 (are they same moulds?).
i am thinking of buying eduard photoetch and or some form of resin cockpit detailing: what should i go for do you think, and where do you guys buy your stuff from?
reading reviews, i see that KOSTER exhausts are necessary to make the kit Battle of Britain accurate (my aim), but i cannot find these anywhere: any ideas here?
i don’t think moskit make them for the He 111.[V]
armaments: what sort of MGs did most BoB have in the nose? the mg15 or the 20mm mg ff?
what resin and or etch details would you guys use here?
finally, i was looking to a plane from KG 53 with the 3 white identification bars on the tail fin and upper wing, but have conflicting information[?]: were these panels on both wings and both sides of the tail fin?
sorry for so many questions, but you know how it is when you want to get something right, right?![:p][;)]
i wish i had known how to order direct. i went through great models and i’ve been waiting almost 2 months. the white bars were a formation flying aid and were applied to the top of the wing and tail. i have pics of a aircraft from kg53 with the 20mm although there is no date supplied.
i picked up the aires resin kit, it includes resin and photoetched parts, photofilm
Any information I’ve seen on the bar markings would indicate that they were applied to both sides of the vertical stabilizor and to the upper right wing
Also, I believe that the average He111 used during the BOB period had the MG 15 7.92mm installed in the nose. My data would indicate that the MG FF 20mm was installed in the a/c nose or the forward part of the belly gunners position in H-3 version on aircraft intended for anti-shipping strikes and/or ground support. Most pictures I’ve seen of H-3 thusly equipped were from units based in Norway, the Mediteranean or the Russian front. (That’s not to say that some crews didn’t modify their aircraft that way during the BOB, its just that I’ve never seen any pictures of them)
Get the Big Ed set from Eduard- includes interior, eterior and bomob bay PE, as well as vinyl masks. It’s their revised set as well- I’m building one (yes, I know, I’m STILL at it) with their older sets- still fantastic! I used the True Details resin cockpit set. The A-Stand (nose) gun was an MG 15 for the BOB versions. Don’t bother with the Clearvax or Squadron Crystal Clear vac-form set- it’s for the later (H-10 and beyond) series with revised cockpit glazing. Koster has a nice set of vacuform transparencies. Good luck- it’s an enjoyable build. BTW Revell and Monogram releases are the same.

thanks fo your advice[:)]
can i ask where you found the true details cockpit set?
hannants in the uk doesn’t have it, and i couldn’t see it on squadron…
greatmodels.com has the aires set, eduard, and a verlinden set. if you want to see the aires cockpit check out the bomber build, i have a pick on the bottom of the first page.
[2c] Soapbox stuff.

I think the forward in Mike Ashey’s book “Detailing Scale Model Aircraft” describes a problem that may be a concern to some here (maybe not I don’t really know).
…
“Amongst all the fancy high-tech kits, resin accessories, and photo etched parts we have lost the true sense and pleasue of the hobby. Many models are expensive almost to the point of being absurd, and many after market products cost as much or more as the kits themselves.”
…
Then he goes on to say that high prices are what is stopping kids from entering this hobby and expanding it’s base etc.
