Detail Question Concerning Vietnam-era Essex Class Carriers

I am working on my conversion of the 1/350 Gallery USS Intrepid (CVS-11) into USS Hancock (CVA-19). My question concerns the side-mounted elevator openings. Do the openings have only one bulkhead or two, as in the double-ovals on all the super carriers? Does anyone have a photo they can share? All of the photos in my late Dad’s files are not clear, nor can I find clear photos online. Thanks! Bill

Seems to me , If I remember correctly . the Bulkhead was not much more pronounced than one in a wearhouse .There was an inside frame about two to three foot inboard . For strength I would imagine .It’s been a long time since my Midway days .

Kinda looked through my Essex Cruise books but no luck. Found this one of the Yorktown at the museum in her as decommissioned config. Behind the plane - This is the interior of the port side elevator curtain doors, the aft part of the opening. There were 4 or 5 roller doors with removable stanchions that could be moved to out of the way on a track with chain activated rollers.

I’ll be going back there later this summer with my grandson and plan to take more pics.

Only one bulkhead - the hulls were extended outboard but the bulkheads were not, and no secondary set was build inboard of the original bulkhead so they could retain hangar space.

I’m doing the USS Ticonderoga from the same kit.

This set will give you all the birdcage antennas on the starboard side and the correct radars except the AN/SPS 43a radar mounted outboard on the island which both Hancock and Tico had.

I have allot of hanger deck photos I’ll be glad to send you if you want them they show all of the hanger deck with no aircraft in the way.
