I’ve recently gotten back into modeling muscle cars, skills are decent, not great. How do you guys paint sharp detail on car bodies like turn signals? I’ve been doing then free hand with a fine brush, and then dry prushing the silver trim around the bezel. Results are ok, but there’s got to be a better way to get sharper lines, with fewer head aches. Some on the parts are too small to efectively mask, for me anyway. Funny don’t seem to have the same problem with the engines?
Also, I’ve had great luck using silver paint markers for things like the chrome window, look pretty good and faster than bare metral foil.
Any suggestions welcome.
BTW - for Aircraft, the www.Aircraftresourcecenter.com is a great reference, do we have a similar site, besides this one, or course :D.

I use metallic leafing pens and silver paint markers too. But I still perfer BMF!!
For your masking problem, for some thing small or at an angle sometimes I hold a small piece of thin paper folded to acheive a certain thickness for strength over the part I don’t wanted painted and then dab or brush on some color. Also for really small detailing dots like guages or knobs use a toothpick to apply the paint. Perfectly round painted circles. You can also file the picks down if you want larger circumferenced circles. Hope this helped a bit

I use Tamiya Masking tape to mask around the turn signal. Tamiya masking tape isn’t as much of a hassle as other tapes (IMO). Then I paint the light chrome silver. When it dries I paint clear orange over it. The clear orange won’t catch the high areas on the chrome silver. If you want it too just apply another layer after the first dries. Always looks good to me. Good luck!

Pretty much what I’ve been doing, probably just need more practice I like the Tamiya tape as well. The only problrm with the toothpick is that sometimes the droplet is bigger that what I’m trying to paint!!!

You’ll do fine man! It does just take practice (everyone here will tell ya). Also, have you tried widdling the tip of the toothpick to a ultra fine point, to were it can easily stab you? Then dipping it into paint and then applying? I use this for the bolts on engines and trannies and whatever else.

You don’t want to drop a droplet onto the piece you just want to cover the tip of the toothpick and make sure there is no excess paint because that will cause a blob. Then you just touch the tip gently to the knob or other detailing project and it will leave a perfect circle. Trying to manuever droplets of color for painting could get hectic real fast. Yes you guys are right, I use a very fine brush with only a few hairs on it, works the same as a wittled down tooth pick. Practice, practice, practice
