desert air ffeild

what would an RAF north afrivan airbase look like , wht would it contain, wht types of buildings, where would the planes be,and wht materails should i use

mederteranian spitfires, a plane bunker, a control tower, some RAF personel cars… and stuff like that. airfix makes a 1/72 control tower thing www.modelexpo-online.com , they sell it but u will have to do a search for it (i cant find it in my catalog but i know its there [:D] )they also sell RAF refuling set- ax3302 RAF emergency set–ax3304 and RAf recovery set-ax3305 and i just found the control tower[:p] ax3380 . i hope that helps.

Sand, lots’a sand. The RAF also flew A-26, and P-51A/B in North Africa. The war was moving fast so tents would prevail and revetments were sandbags. The control tower probably was quite sparse and built in a hurry. I think I have some pics, I’ll get back.

was the airfield pure sand?

revetments were sandbags?

Some of the airfields were sand, there were also ones that were rocky depending on exact location. The desert is a large place. Yes the revetments were sandbags, or 55gal druns full of sand or ammo boxes, anything handy.

so a revetments are something where u would place a aa guns

wht about planes where they placed in hangars or just left on the side of the airstrip

The A/c were also in revetments, “U” shaped and open side facing the taxiway.

This is an A-36A at Tafaraoui, Algeria The runway (and everything else) is rock.
