Desaturated colors

In Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Flags of Our Fathers and probably a lot more movies, the production companies desaturated the color palate with filters and other special effects. I’m wondering if modelers have attempted to alter their color palate for similar effect, how it was done, and how well did it work?

I expect to attempt such would obscure details, since a lot of this “desaturation” seems to result in an overall darkening and lord knows olive drab is dark enough to start with, but still …

Just curious: guess I’m entering an “experimental phase” in my work!

The short answer is Absolutely!. I’ve recently switched to lifecolor acrylics for filtering base colors. I feel that this is a must to acheive ANY level of realism.

Actually, the point for me is to avoid ‘darkening’ and to accentuate detail. The techniques are standard now days, pigments pastels and the airbrush are great mediums to acheive these effects.
