decals over zimmerit

was just wondering if putting decals over zimmerit would leave bubbles or look like crap.

Putting decals over zimmerit can be tough. This following procedure would probably achieve good results but there’s always the chance for air to get under the decal.

  1. use future to prepare the area where the decal is to go
  2. use a decal - set solution then apply the decal
  3. use a decal sol solution and allow it to dry over night
  4. repeat step 3 one or two more times until the decal finally lays in the ruts
  5. dull-cote to seal the decal in

Many people will not even attempt to decal over zimmerit but will paint their crosses and numbers on instead.

What’s zimmerit?
Steve Gorder

Zimmerit was textured stuff (not sure of the actual materia) used on German tanks during WWII. I think it was some type of anti mine thing.

I had asked that question myself just a few days ago, basically it was a pasted-on substance intended to prevent attachment of magnetic hollow charges.

Here’s some of the info I found:

I’ve done it before, it’s a little tricky but I’ve done it so well to were I can do a black wash on the zimmerit and the wash will collect in the recceses on the decals! You need a very thin, but thorough, coat of gloss, some decal set and a paper towl to push the air bubbles out. Will try to get pics up soon…

Also-remember to trim your decals to the image-the clear stuff will leave silvering. Some micro-sol and a slightly dull X-acto knife will help it “settle” down.

Great tips guys [tup][tup]
