Decals over invasion stripes

Will the black/white contrast of the invasion stripes show through the white star part of the insignia decal? The decals are Eagle Strike.

Drew, if you think it might…guess what?! Easy fix- make a mask for the circle, slightly smaller and paint it white.

Often with camo stuff I make a mask over the primer in the shape (smaller) of the decal and leave it on till the end.

Avi …I just ran into that very same issue with my mustang lll. .I applied the fuselage roundel. And the black showed through no big deal for me cuss I’ll weather it out …plus I’m dot filtering it too. Like GM said …I usely make a mask slightly smaller and paint a lighter color ie white to keep the undercoat from showing though

I’m doing invasion stripes in a different way on my P-47 Thunderbolt. Instead of spraypainting the stripes, I’ve decided to kick it up another notch by hand brushing the stripes white and black. Since most invasion stripes were never spray painted on but were done by hand.

Also, my thought of using flat white and flat black gave me an impression the stripes would look too new during combat.

Instead, I’m using Vallejo Off White and Floquil’s Weathered Black to give it a bit of both a sort of hand brushed look and a subtled beaten, weathered look as well.

I think that it would be very realistic. much better than the perfect looking stripeson other kits. hastily applied before d day was the method. good work.

Yes, I think this is a common flaw on many builders kits. Many people try to make the invasion stripes perfect and in reality, they were far from perfect. In most cases the stripes were painted on by the ground crews; with only a few hours’ notice, few of the stripes were masked. As a result, depending on the abilities of the crew, the stripes were often far from neat and tidy.

WHAT!

Heresy! We all “know” the crew would have used a ruler and masking tape to be able to follow the directives implicitly. After all thousands of modelers and decal makers would be wrong……. Say it ain’t so Joe

But duster …it is …it’s …and yes there wrong [;)].

5-high [t$t]

Here’s the kicker… on real aircrafts they look so perfect and straight … from a distance. LOL!
