Decals over decals question

I’m working on the Academy Sopwith Camel and have run into something that has me a bit flummoxed (just when I think I’m making progress, something pops up to remind me that I’m still really a newbie!). The tailfin requires applying one decal over another. I haven’t done this before, and the interweb has conflicting advice. Should I use Microsol after the first decal is applied or not until after they are both on? Also, the tricolor decal has to go over a spike (see pic) which I assume is for rigging although the instructions don’t show anything getting attached to it. How do you suggest applying this decal – Cut a slice in it to go around the spike? Try to impale it in the correct location? Cut off the spike and forget about it? I’d appreciate any advice you could share. Thanks so much!

Troy, is masking and painting that tricolor an option? It looks like it would be pretty easy to do, assuming you have an airbrush in your tool kit, and would avoid that big decal altogether.

Otherwise, if it were me, I think I’d apply the tricolor decal first, get it perfect using microsol etc., and then hit it with a thin clear varnish and let that cure fully before applying the lettering decals on top – and even so, be very careful with your setting solutions. Direct dabbing only, no wiping/brushing!

As for the spike (rudder control cable mast?), I’d probably cut a slice in the decal as you suggested. Or maybe… cut the spike off, apply the decal, then glue the spike back on!

I’ve clear coated over the decals, then put the second decal on.

Tom, I don’t have an airbrush. I just use rattle cans and brush and I think those would not do do a great job of replacing the decal. I might just give the decal-on-decal a try and call it a learning experience. Great idea on removing and regluing the spike afterward. Thanks!
