Decals on a real wood deck

I’m building 1/350 Bismarck and adding a real wood deck. Is there any way to apply the bow and stern swastika decals or will they only work with styrene? Am I going to have to hand paint the red stripe and swastika on the wood deck? Thanks for any replies.

Decals need to be applied to a very glossy surface with no air spaces. If there are no grooves representing planking lines in the area of the decals, it may work if you put down a very glossy finish first. You can dullcoat the area after decal application. But if there are grooves representing planking lines, my guess is it will silver in the grooves. If you can fill the grooves with a transparent filler and gloss the surface, it might work.

Just wondering,is that the Tamiya offering ? If so,does the wood deck cover the seams on the three piece deck,or is it broken up like the kit ?

Some Micro-sol should take care of that issue though…just like recessed panel lines on an aircraft.

Mark, i have the Revell kit and a wood deck and was thinking of doing the same. I did find one build online where the guy used a decal from a 32nd aircraft kit. It looked like it went on fine. Being on a white background should help and i was thinking of trimming the decal real close.

But i think you will have to paint the red band and white circle.

Thanks for all the replies. And I misspoke. It’s a 1/700 Bismarck - Trumpeter and the deck is the new offering by Infini. The main deck is 2 pieces. It is amazingly thin so I might get the decal to set. I’m actually more concerned about it adhering to the wood - the “grooves” are microscopic.
