decal help please

Hello all,

I’m having some troubles with the decals of my Trumpeter Mig-21: they’re shiny and refuse to be softened by Mr. Mark Softener. Should I try another softener (if so which one) or should I just fork over more money for after market decals?

Thanks in advance.

Terry

T Chan,

Welcome to the forums!

Firstly, you mention “shiny” decals. I assume you mean that they are silvered once applied to the model surface. If your mig is to be camouflaged with a flat finish, use Future acrylic floor finish to coat the back of the decal before placement. You may choose to apply the future directly to the model. Once cured, the Future will leave a smooth glossy surface that your decals will like and no silvering. You may then spray on a flat dullcote to acheive a matt finish. If your model is natural metal, just use the future method on the back of the decal, it works great.

Now, Secondly, if you are having problems with the decals softening and conforming to irregular surfaces, invest in Micro-Sol and Micro-Set, follow the instructions on the bottle. You can pick these up cheaper than a AM decal set.

Personally, depending on the kit, I use AM decals when I can get them, but sometimes, the kit markings are just fine.

Steve, thank you for the suggestion. The mig is in a NMF, with only the red stars on wings and tail and a number on the nose, hence it doesn’t make sense to buy AM decals. I’ll try microsol and microset and see how it goes.
