Declaring this one completed. Das BOOT on patrol; U-96 from the movie. Old Revell kit I had on the shelf since the 90’s. 21" in length. Had fun doing this diorama and being my first on the subject matter, it didn’t turn out that bad after all. So please be kind. Artistic license prevails on this one.

That water looks menacing, it looks like you used cotton?

Thanks Bill! Yes cotton balls were used. Really should have had the cotton sheets to pull apart. I think that would have worked much easier. This was a science experiment so to speak. Cotton could have been thinned out a bit more. I do need a few guys on the Bridge. Being 1:125 scale makes that a bit difficult. Wonder if I can get away with 1:144 or 1:100 scale guys?
That looks great. The waves add a great realistic look. I think you did a fantastic job. Adding people on the sail would be a nice accent to the realism. But a great job overall tho. I like it.
Great job, especially if it’s your first.
One suggestion though . . . do not photograph your subjects in the sunroom, the framework in the background is quite distracting and takes away from the awesome work.

Nice job on the waves. Those old Revell kits leave a LOT to be desired. I have built a few, so I know what you went through to get it to look good.
Should you want to build another, may I suggest Revells 1/144 scale subs. They a a far superior kit when compared to the 1/125 scale kit.
OR: if you have the space , get one of the 1/72 type VII kits. I have built two, and their size just Beggs for some super detailing.

I have an interested party, in my local area, who may want to buy this off me. Curious as to what would be a good price for something like this - as much as I’d like to keep it? I usually don’t build for sale so this sort of caught me off guard.

Tell them to offer a price you cant refuse then go from there. That usually works for me.
Whether he’s in the North Sea or North Atlantic Ocean, that water looks really rough, but you did an excellent job.

That looks incredible! Very believable setting for the North Atlantic. I have the same Revell kit(U-99) and have similar plans for it. I know that you mentioned using cotton balls for the waves’ crests but what technique did you use to form the waves? Did you drill out the limber holes? Excellent job and I know that it’s very flattering that someone wants to buy your work but personally, something that nice I’d keep for my display shelf.

Thanks Tom! The waves were fromed by gluing crumbled up sections of aluminum foil to pink insulation board. After that dried, a whole sheet of aluminum foil was glued down over the crumbled sections and contoured by finger. Primer applied. Then airbrushed with with Tamiya Sea Green, Clear Blue, and Clear coat. I used clear gloss Gesso acrylic medium for additional whisps along the swells, with some cotton, as well as using the medium on the cotton splashinging along the sides of the hull. Also, some of the clear gloss Gesso was used along the hull (especially streaking from the limber holes, along the deck, and sail of the boat to give it the “wet” look. The Limber holes were not drilled out. Instead they were painted using AK dark cammo and light rust washes. The salt staining is done with white artist pencil.

Jack that is bloody awesome! Great work mate, it’s inspiring me to go back and finish mine. I have chosen a similar colour for the wooden decking, what influenced you to use that colour, if I may ask?
