Custom Nose Art Decals

Some of you may already have seen Swanny’s post on nose art:

http://www.finescale.com/FSM/CS/forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=571050

JoeRugby (clever lad) came up with a brilliant idea. Custom nose art decal sheets of the samples shown with proceeds going to the Purple Heart Foundation and USO.

What we need is somebody with an ALPS printer (we need to print white to do the art justice) and somebody with good photoshopping skills to create the art. We’re hoping for volunteers who will donate their time, and buyers who will be willing to pay full retail for a piece of history. It would be even better if FSM could step up to the plate and help with the organization (which they kind of do with providing these excellent forums), and a free ad in FSM once the are is done? [;)]

So. Anybody out there? Can we get this idea off the ground and flying high?

Bill

What scale are we talking? Even though I may never use them, I would be willing to buy a set or two in 1/48.

I was thinking about 1/48 and 1/72. I don’t know if I would use them either, but they would be a nice thing to have!

Hi Guys, count me in for several sets in 1/72. I wish I could help out in the technacal dept, but alas, I am a computor moron. Thanks, Joe.

Well, so far we have four potential buyers, and no manufacturing capability…

Is there no-one with an ALPS printer?

WOW ! No kidding…I am lucky to be able to get my machine to fire up in the am…suggestions for artists…try waikong, try jboutin and of course Swanny and Pixalater (sp)…I will ask some of the guys on our youth team that are good with the keyboards…I will certainly get in for a straight up donation (I do not have enough room for many multi engined birds…

Joe.

If you need help with money donations, just let me know. I can chip in a few bucks to help get the project off of the ground.

I have an Alps coming to me over next couple of weeks. I can help ya at that point.

I’ll keep in touch on this one.

Jeff

Jeff,

That’s great news. Now all we need is a photoshop artiste!

Bill

WOW (again) and then WHOA! Do we have the permission of the “owner” of the media to be reproduced to do so? Secondly, if this is to be done we need concensus and organizatio n…agreed?

Joe, you’re being clever again!

Guess we better find out, huh? I’ll contact Swanny and see what’s up…

I would like to help out with this project. Right now, I don’t know how much help I can be, but I feel it is one way to help our veterans. After all, I are one. Vietnam that is.

Please…easy on the “clever”…I find keeping expectations and perceptions low makes anything one acomplishes look like climbing Mt. Everest in your socks!

Hey Berny, what branch did you serve with and what years? I am related to a few Viet Vets myself;

Father Navy Corpsman 26th Marines(?) 1967-1968 Tet Offensive: Hue, Phu Bai, Khe Sanh and the vacation wonderland of I Corp…viva Da Nang.

Mother Navy Nurse Stateside Camp Lejune and Cherry Point MCAS

Uncle UH-1 Pilot II Corp Us Army, unit unknown…

My dads a vet to he was in the air force stationed at cam rhan bay 1965-1967 558 FS 12TFW

Joe

I was in the USAF from June '62 to Jul '88. In June '67 To June '68 I was at Tan Son Nhut AB Vietnam as an aircraft mechanic (RF-4C Crew Chief) with the 16 th TRS. I also went through the January 30 '68 Tet Offensive. From July '68 to July '69 I was at Udorn RTAFB with the 13 TFS (F-4D Crew Chief). My next assignment was at Hill AFB Utah assigned to the 2952 Combat Logistic Support Squadron. I was sent to Clark AB PI for six months. I was assigned as Team Chief, Rapid Area Maintenance Team (RAM Team). We went all over South East Asia repairing or taking apart battle damaged F-4 aircraft. When not on a RAM assignment we did the Martin Baker MK 6/7 mod on the F-4 aircraft. After my six months in the PI was up, I went back to Hill AFB for 24 hours and then to Thialand ( Ubon) for six months, doing the same thing. Then back to Hill AFB for 24 hours and then to Vietnam (Tan Son Nhut) for six months doing the same thing.

When I got back to Hill AFB, which I thought would be only for 24 hours, I was told I had an assignment to Eglin AFB Fl. I had less than ten days to clear and report tp Eglin. When I got there I was assigned to the 58 TFS as a Crew Chief. Less than three months later I was at Ubon RTAFB for Linebacker I. While at Ubon I was a Crew Chief/Block Chief. Not only was I responsible for my own aircraft I had three other Crew Chief’s and their aircraft I had to supervise and watch over. We were there for six months. After returning back to the states and after five months I was sent to Zaragoza AB Spain, never to see South East Asia again.

I left that war with a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Two Purple Hearts, plus other awards. When I retired I had twenty one medals and decorations that I had earned. And I do mean earned, none were ever given to me, the way some in the USAF are now. [soapbox]

Holly cow Bill you where all over the map. My dad was in from 1954-1989 retierd from peterson AFB CO he was crew chief on C130’s, I told him about what was going on and wanted to know where you where stationed he also did a stint in fukoka with 35 TFS 8TFW.

WOW ! Berny…thanks for what you tolerated and acheived…

On to the Veterans Appreciation Decals Project (all ex military guys jump in with a good acronym)

  1. Approval

Current owner of images agrees, in writing, to allow the use/reproduction of images for the production of water slide transfers.

Agreement by FSM, it affiliates et al for a specified group, yet to be named, to utilize the internet forums as a primary point of distribution for decals.

  1. Organization

For the protection of all concerned parties it is suggested that some form of “governing” body be developed; i.e. an LLC

Determinations to be made;

cost of above mentioned protection(s)

cost of production (on an “if necessary” basis)

possible renumeration for the party(parties) that control rights to the images

raw material costs

compensation for skill specific individuals

size of production run

details of production run

i.e. offered in multiple scales etc.

This I think is begining to take shape.

I emailed Swanny last night, and he replied, so far I haven’t seen a response to my further email. He has permission to use the images and is already in discussion with a decal manufacturer. I have suggested that he has first kick at the cat (with apologies to cat lovers), and am awaiting his yea or nay before we can do anything. Joe’s knocked out a fine summary of hurdles to get over if we can proceed.

So, true to armed forces SOP we hurry up and wait!

Kewl, very kewl…

Any further word from Swanny? Just like the military as you said. Stand in line and hurry up and wait.
