Found this pic of a Red Bull MiG-17. I guess one way to gain market share is through air superiority. What next? A Sobe F-100? The Pepsi F-4? Dogfighting for your thirst!
Anyway… what a crazy paint scheme, but it looks pretty cool. Just thought I’d post it for those of you who might get inspired by it, or just want to see a cool airplane.
Heck, I’d let’em paint the Kool-Aid man on mine(If I had a warbird like that), If they paid the fuel, parts and other related costs…NASCAR comes to mind for some reason…[8D]
Saw a story on the Onion years ago. Talked about the trouble NASA was having with funding, so they merged with NASCAR to create NASACAR. They had a Space Shuttle adorned with sponsor stickers. Ernie Ervin was the driver. Said it was faster than anyhitng else on the straightaways, but took a while to get turned. LOL.
Kool-Aid OH YEAH! Didn’t Pepsi have a contest were you got the points and redeemed them for prizes? The top prize was a Harrier, and some guy actually had the points to get it. Pepsi said no, so he sued them and won. They had to get him a Harrier.
It may be a restored warbird, but it’s a daily driver too. AirShow tour performer and that costs big money to do. It will find it’s way into a museum when she’s put in her hours. Yeah Ernie had trouble seeing after his big wreck, hard to pick out your braking points when your going that fast!..[8D]
Might look a little funny but it sure is a treat to see that thing flying at airshows. If i remember correctly the pilot is a retired USAF pilot that flew early U.S. Jets around the same time the Mig-17 was new. In the interview i saw he looked to be about in his 50’s or 60’s. He said it is really cool to fly the plane that he was prepared to shoot down years ago. He’s done some pretty neat low level passes at the few airshows i’ve seen him at and that bird looks like it is really movin. It’s only fitting that a former russian mig would end up painted all red. Looks weird but I dont think it looks bad.
I agree with you two, I hate to see a warbird adorned with crappy sponsors. sigh Redbull must have a TON of money, 2 F-1 teams, sponsors at least 1 team in every european racing league, and they own a jet. At least i flies, right??
I heard a story, about a warbird owner, who was approached by an"expert," who complained that his colour scheme was wrong. “What colour’s yours, then?” was the response. If someone is prepared to spend 500,000 (£ or$) getting it back into the air, I don’t feel that it’s anyone’s business, but his, what colour he paints it.
Just wish the sponsors would have a bit more respect for proper historical appearances in cases like warbirds. They should be limited to a zap sticker of their logo or two of a specified size in a specified position for the time that they are sponsoring. I just find the flying billboard concept repelling.
