Cracks in primer

hi, I use Tamiya primer and it cracks, see pickture.

I am a newbie so wonder what I did wrong.’

its been painted with Revell, Italian red, gloss, No 34 before, went totally wrong and I cleaned the body and the used primer.

Anyone can help me?

What did you clean the plastic with before applying the primer? It looks like some kind of solvent or oil/grease was trapped underneath the primer.

I cleaned it with alcohol and then hand washing detergent

Possible some soap was left on the plastic? That’s about the only thing I can think of, unless there’s something wrong with the primer itself.

Is it a very old can, or not shaken up well enough? Spraying a cold can in a very cold garage?

No I don’t think so , I will sand it down and try again.

Since the rest of it looks fine I am also going to throw in with there being some detergent residue left which prevented the primer to stick. Use the alcohol as the last cleaning stage since it leaves nothing behind. Let us know how it turns out!

It kind of looks like you sprayed too much primer in one coat. Or you applied more coats of primer too soon.

If the primer gets applied to thick before bottom layers are fully cured it will crack like that.

And you said you applied paint as well? How long did you let the primer cure before you applied paint?

Ah, that’s a good point!

It’s why cans of spray paint (etc) often say “recoat within one hour, or after 48 hours.” There’s a time period in between where the earlier coats can get reactivated in a bad way by the new coats.

It does look a bit thick in a single coat. But also, hand soap is not advised for washing, as it may have additives for skin care. Dawn dish soap has a good following in the model painting world. I personally use odorless mineral spirits.

It’s unclear to me if you stripped the red you mentioned though ?

Good catch. I saw “hand washing detergent” and read it as “dish soap.” Dawn should be harmless, assuming fully rinsed off, but anything meant for hands might have oils or waxes in it that are meant to NOT rinse off easily, so your hands smell/feel nice after washing.

Thanks everyone, I will paint tomorrow and follow your advise, again, thanks

Like others have stated, I’ve also sprayed too thick of a layer and had it crack up, very frustrating but just part of learning I guess.

Hi, I got a nice finish on it in the end, thanks for all advise.

What technique did you use to get the better finish?

Grinding down to primer, New layer primer and grinding it very smooth, then very thincoats of paint

Last layer of paint i put on thicker and after letting it dry polished it again before clearcoat
