Coversion, Chinook to Sea Knight, how hard?

From my esteemed colleague, Tread Head on Armorama,

Any ideas. Sounds like it could be interresting.

That would entail A LOT of scratchbuilding and reworking. Kind of along the lines of converting a CH-53D into a CH-53E only worse.[xx(] I’d wait for the kit to come out.

Would be a lot of work, but he is toying with the idea of making a 1/35 CH-46 from the forthcoming 1/35 Trumpeter CH-47 Chinook. Interresting idea.

If he’s got the time and resources, then I say go for it. More power to him!

ACK! The idea is making my head hurt!! [V]
The Chinook is a much bigger bird than the Phrog is…would have to do a lot of cutting of styrene to get it down to scale. Also would need to totally reshape the nose and probably need new cockpit glass, too. The fuel sponsons on the side of the fuselage are totally different, and, and…ACK! lol. Waaaay too much for me, but if you’re a heck of a scratchbuilder, it’s possible.

Wow, it’d be more a scratchbuild with some parts maybe being modified for the finished product, wouldn’t it? Still I’d like to see a 1/35 Phrog to go with the Chinook. Heck, I’ll be crazy and say I want a 1/35 -53E! May as well get them all in one scale. Course, I’d be just as happy if those all came in 1/48. I’ve got the Phrog, just waiting on the model companies to get it in gear and give me the others.

Like both in 1/48th myself, would be a lot of work to convert

They are two different airframes… Dragonfire said: “Kind of along the lines of converting a CH-53D into a CH-53E…”… probably more along the lines of converting a CH-3E to a CH-53E; two completely different animals.

The fuselage chord/dimensions are different, the pylons are different, the cockpits are different, the transparencies are different, the gear configuarations are different, the rotor heads/blades are different, etc etc [:O]

Probably be easier to make a wood/clay mock-up of the “46” and vacuform it.

Take care,
Frank

O.K. Guess they are not as close as they look. Hopefully, someone has a CH-46 in the works as well. Maybe Academy will pantograph their 1/48th to 1/35 scale. That would be interresting.

Unless MRC wanted to compete with Trumpeter and realease CH46 in 1/35 …I don’t think so.

Now… the chances of Trumpeter doing a Sea knight in 1/35 is possible.

I have asked that guy in China to keep me updated on the 1/35 Hook.

I don’t think it can be done!!! Yes! They are both products of Boeing but there body shapes are too differant and you would most likely end up screwing up a perfictly good Chinook kit wich won’ be cheap to boot!!! Just give them some time and i’m sure someone will deliver!!![:)]

Well, Tamiya has a 1/48 scale “Sea Magnet” with USMC markings, check that out.
