I am just starting to build the 1/32 F4U 1D Corsair from Trumpeter that I got from Sanata, and I’m a little stumped at the colour of the cockpit. The instructions call for the interior to be painted flat black, but that just doesn’t sound right. Didn’t most American WWII aircraft have an interior green finish? I always use Model Master acrylics for my aircraft projects, so if anyone has a recommend FS #, that would be perect. I haven’t been able to find a good source on the internet yet so I was hoping some of you might be able to point me in the right direction. I eagerly await your learned responses. Thanks in advance.
try the ipms stockholm site .they have a series of articles on us aircraft interior colours .
the subject is not as straight forward as we might think .

Prior to the F4U-1D, Corsair cockpits were painted in Green Chromate. Starting with the 1D model, the side walls of many of the cockpits were painted flat black. Like every other thread on interior colors, you’ll likely get lots of opinions. But this is based on my references & is the way I finish Corsairs.
I am building the same kit right now. Watchout for poorly molded exhaust tubing on the engine, and remember to glue it in starting from the top, the instructions are wrong there. From all the reference I got off the net the kit color callouts are correct. The main gear legs arent always white like the callout in the kit, look at reference and you’ll see alotta hog legs are fuselage color.
There was a very good response posted on this site or ARC that detailed the interior colors that were used on WWII aircraft. I don’t recall the name of the author but he did a lot of research and covered almost all of the aircraft that were in use.
Based on that reference, rjplasticmod is correct , some versions of the Corsair had black upper cockpit walls.
From what I’ve heard and seen, the side walls above the consoles was flat black. But, below the side consoles was interior green. The side consoles were also flat black. I think the seats were usually painted green, but I have seen some black ones.
Can’t remember the last time I saw a floor in a corsair, nor that wierd shade of green.
The advice seems to be very accurate, and I intend to follow through with black side walls and consoles. I think I’ll try a darker shade of grey, then apply a couple of black washes and drybrush some highlite colour.
I wish I had asked Woodbeck a little earlier, I finished the engine off a few weeks ago complete with exhaust tubes. It looks good to me, but I haven’t tried fitting it into the cowling yet. Well, here’s hoping.
Well on mine it looked good on the engine but when I tried to attach the bottom of the wing/fuselage, the little stubs of the exhuast where wrong. The angle of the exhaust off the engine was to high and needed to be angled down. I remedied this by cutting off the stubs, boxing in the exhuast outlet and making new stubs from proper sized electrical solder ca’d to the front part of the box I made. Looks fine.
