?correct colors for an ODS M106A1

Found a Tamiya kit in my stash that I would like to do in current desert camo. I would think Testors Gulf War Armor would work for the hull but really don’t have a clue as to the interior colors as well as those for the mortar and base plate.

Appreciate any help on this subject.

Mike

If your trying to do a Current (2003-on) M1064 Carrier realize the Mortar is a 120mm weapon, not the 107mm/4.2" in the kit. External Fuel tanks, Baseplates are different, radio suites, etc.

I’m not sure if the 4.2" was even used in Desert Storm in '91

The M106A2 was used in ODS ('90-'91). The Tamiya kit represents an early M106A1 though. You would have to update the radiator grill area, exhaust stack, and internal fuel tank for an A2. I did this a while ago, here is mine:

For paint, during Operation Desert Storm the colors varried. For vehicles that were already sand or were painted sand in the US, Testors Model Master Sand, FS 33531 is correct. Most of the vehicles were quickly painted sand in Saudi Arabia though and were painted with a sand colored paint that was bought locally. Testors Gulf War Army/Marine Gulf Sand is a pretty good color match. It is darker than FS33531 Sand.

If you mean in current ops in Iraq (OIF, since '03), then the upgarded M1064A3 is correct, as noted above. MR Models does an upgrade set to convert the Tamiya kit to an M1064A3. I have built that as well.

For OIF vehicles, the correct paint color is Testors Model Master Sand, FS33531. It is an exact match to CARC Sand.

Good luck.

The M106A2 was in use during Desert Storm. I don’t believe we went to the M1064 or M1064A3 until 1998 and 2000 respectively. The base Tamiya kit needs the engine grill area, exhaust and internal fuel tank updated to A2 standards. Best bet would be to kitbash the Tamiya M106A1 with the Academy M113A2, but updating the Tamiya kit would not be that difficult on its own.

Looks like Rob and I were posting at the same time again. Great minds do think alike. [tup] [swg]

I appreciate all the help on this subject. After further review, I have decided that going with what appears to be an early US Army NATO type scheme, in the instructions, is probably best for this particular kit. I have the Academy M113A2 which is probably a more appropriate subject for a ODS paint scheme. If I am wrong, please advise.

Mike

The Academy M113A2 would be great for a ODS ('90-'91) vehicle.

Good luck with it.
